O Lord SrI rAma! O My father! O Lord of the Universe! O Enemy of khara the demon!
How long shall I look forward for You in my mind? How shall I spend time?
1. Surrendering my mind to You alone, I reared this as Your body.
2. In the Earth, I remained desiring performance of actions; but what I thought of was a different path.
3. I too shall keep playing (my role in) the puppet show like everyone else in this world.
4 & 5. Should You expose my inner secrets in the midst of others? It may be alright only for those who enjoy music; but it will be a joke for those utter triflers.
6. May be, You are present among earlier devotees. Won’t You come? Does it involve any expenditure of Your wealth?
7. Why this much of unconcern? Please do not find further faults with me.
8. How much tears shall I shed? By complaining to whom, my grief will be relieved?
9. This body is born for You alone; please do not miss it; Your grace is sufficient.
10. Is my desiring (You) itself wrong? Please do not have that behaviour.
11. Is there a wretch like me in the World who does not understand the secrets of this kali age?
12. I have abused You many a times; I am now experiencing that result.
13. Is it possible that the effect of previous actions would not have effect on one? However, can these remain without being relieved by the light of devotion?
14 & 15. Those who have been earning their livelihood by selling flowers, will not come to sell fire-wood even if invited; (if I stoop so,) wouldn’t that be slighting You? Won’t You abandon Your thoughts of deceiving me?
16. I only have a name that this tyAgarAja belongs to You.

Notes –
Variations –
1 – trOva – dOva.

3 – rAvO – rAvu : rAvO - is the appropriate word.

General – In some books, caraNas 2 and 3 are interchanged; caraNas 9 and 14 are interchanged. caraNas 14 and 15 should come together – in order to derive coherent meaning.

References –
5 – khara – One of the demons associated with SUrpaNakhA who was killed by SrI rAma in the battle at daNDaka forest.

Comments –
2 - nEnu nI mEnani pencinAnu – This can also be translated as 'Considering myself to be Your body, I reared it'. This will accord with the principle of viSishTAdvaita wherein the whole manifested universe is considered as the body of the Supreme Lord. Please refer to -
http://www.ramanuja.org/sv/bhakti/archives/may98/0061.html

4 – A culukana – From the example of ‘a flower vendor will not deign to sell fire-wood even if invited’, it seems that SrI tyAgarAja is refusing to adopt any path other than devotion; if he changes his path, it would be slighting the Lord even though He is delaying His grace. This is further substantiated by caraNa 2, wherein SrI tyAgarAja states ‘while I am pursuing the path of action, what I thought was different’ and caraNa 3 wherein he states that ‘while I shall continue to play the puppet show like anyone else, but in my mind, how long shall I look forward to You?’

O Lord of SrI rAma - spouse of sItA! O Lord praised by this tyAgarAja!
I am unable to express that it is this much comfort; whoever knows as to how much and how it is!
The comfort is known only to those self-restrained having innate compassion and love (of Lord);
the comfort is known to Lord Sankara who relishes by mixing the refined sugar called the holy name of SrI rAma in the nectarine juice of (music) svara – rAga – laya.

P I (nE) am unable (jAla) to express (jeppa) that (ani) it is this much (inta) comfort (saukhyamu) (saukhyamani); whoever (evariki) knows (telusunO) as to how much (entO) and how (EmO) it is!

A O Lord of SrI rAma - spouse (kAnta) of sItA! The comfort is known (telusunu) only to those (AdulakE) self-restrained (dAnta) having innate (svAnta) compassion (karuNA) and love (of Lord) (prEma) (prEmAdulakE); otherwise (kAni),
I am unable to express that it is this much comfort; whoever knows as to how much and how it is!

C The comfort is known (telusunu) to Lord Sankara (Sankaruniki) who relishes (bhujincE) (literally eats)
by mixing (miSramu jEsi) the refined (kaNDa) sugar (cakkera) called (anE) the holy (vara) name (nAmamu) (nAmamanE) of SrI rAma,
in (andu) the nectarine (sudhA) juice (rasamu) (rasamandu) of (music) svara – rAga – laya;
O Lord praised (vinuta) by this tyAgarAja! I am unable to express that it is this much comfort; whoever knows as to how much and how it is!

Notes -
Variations –
2 – dAnta – In some books, this has been taken as an epithet of SrI rAma.

“The intrinsic nature of devotion (prEma svarUpaM) defies exact and precise analysis, definition, or description.
It is like the experience of joy which a dumb man has when he tastes something sweet.
The devotion, nevertheless, manifests itself, in one – whosoever it be – when one has made oneself fit for such manifestation by constant sAdhanA.
Devoid of all attributes and free from all characteristic tendencies to selfish action, it is of the nature of a homogenous and integral subjective experience, subtler than the subtlest, manifesting itself automatically in the wake of fulfillment of certain conditions, and expanding every moment.”
(Translation by Swami Tyagisananda)

Comments -

General – Translation of anupallavi words 'karuNA svAnta prEmAdulakE' is very unsatisfactory, because the thoughts of the saint could not be properly gauged.

O Lord SrI rAma! O King! O Lord praised by this tyAgarAja!
Please don't do injustice to me; please do not treat me as an alien, because You have earlier protected those who had numerous faults.
Didn’t jaDa bharata relieve the fatigue of the frightened fawn by taking it into his fold? Didn’t a tortoise save the mountain mandara which submerged into the sea? Didn’t yudhishThira save duryOdhana who had malice towards pANDavas?
Please don't do injustice to me during my middle ages by saying that ‘I shall not relieve the troubles’ created by my elder brother.

Word-by-word Meaning

P O Lord SrI rAma! Please don't do (sEyakurA) injustice (anyAyamu) to me (nAyeDa); O Lord SrI rAma! please do not treat (jUDakurA) (literally look at) me (nannu) as an alien (anyunigA) (nannanyunigA).

A O King (rAjanya)! You (nIvu) have earlier protected (brOcinAvu) those (vArani) who had (gala) numerous (ennO) faults (tappulu); therefore (ganukanu),
O Lord SrI rAma! please don't do injustice to me; O Lord SrI rAma! please do not treat me as an alien.

C Didn’t (lEdA) jaDa bharata (bharatuDu) relieve (tIrcaga) the fatigue (baDalika) of the frightened fawn (jinka SiSuvunu) by taking (etti) (SiSuvunetti) it into his fold?
Didn’t (lEdA) a (oka) tortoise (kUrmamu) save (kApADaga) the mountain (giri) (girinoka) mandara which submerged (munigina) into the sea (kaDalini)?
Didn’t (lEdA), in this Earth (puDamini), yudhishThira – son (putruDu) of yama (dharma) – save (brOvaga) duryOdhana – one who had malice (drOhi) towards pANDavas?
O Lord praised (nuta) by this tyAgarAja! O Lord SrI rAma! please don't do injustice to me during my middle (naDimi) ages (prAyamuna) (by saying) that (ani) ‘I shall not (lEnu) (lEnani) relieve (tIrpa) the troubles’ (bAdha) created by my (nA) elder brother (pUrvaju).

Notes –
Variations –
1 – nannanyunigA jUDakurA nAyeDa rAma - anyunigA jUDakurA nAyeDa.

6 – tIrpa lEnani – tIrpa lEdA. The traditional meaning – as contained in all the books – is that SrI tyAgarAja beseeches the Lord to relieve him of the problems created by his elder brother. Therefore 'tIrpa lEnani' is appropriate to derive such a meaning. On the other hand, 'tIrpa lEdA' would mean 'did you not relieve'. If 'tIrpa lEdA' is taken as correct, all the examples cited and also the pallavi words 'anyAyamu sEyakurA' would be rendered meaningless.

References –
2 – enno tappulu gala – sugriva is one such person who received Lord’s grace in spite of his faults.

3 – jaDa bharata – The story of bharata and jaDa bharata appears in SrImad bhAgavataM, Book 5, Chapters 7 to 14; the story of fawn reared by jaDa bharata appears in ibid, Chapter 8. For a brief of the story, please visit web site –

4 – kUrmamu – Refers to kUrmAvatAra of Lord vishNu.

5 – pANDava drOhi – In the book of TKG, this has been taken to mean ‘aSvattAma’ son of drONAcArya. In other books, this has been taken to mean ‘duryOdhana’.
The story of aSvattAma slaying all the sons of pANDavAs and ultimately letting off brahmAstra to destroy the pANDava race, is contained in mahAbhArata – Book 10, sauptika parva – Chapters 3 to 17. For the complete story, please visit website –

http://www.ibiblio.org/sripedia/oppiliappan/archives/mar05/msg00087.html

According to mahAbhArata, the life of aSvattAma was saved by draupadi before whom he (aSvattAma) was brought to mete out justice. He was earlier cursed by SrI kRshNa in the following words –

“As regards thyself, all wise men know thee for a coward and a sinful wretch! Always engaged in sinful acts, thou art the slayer of children. For this reason, thou must have to bear the fruit of these thy sins. For 3,000 years thou shalt wander over this earth, without a companion and without being able to talk with anyone. Alone and without anybody by thy side, thou shalt wander through diverse countries, O wretch, thou shalt have no place in the midst of men. The stench of pus and blood shall emanate from thee, and inaccessible forests and dreary moors shall be thy abode! Thou shalt wander over the Earth, O thou of sinful soul, with the weight of all diseases on thee.”

5 – pANDava drOhi – The story relates to yudhishThira coming to the rescue of duryOdhana, karNa and their army when the latter were vanquished by gandharvas in a battle at dvaitavana where pANDavas were staying during their exile. is not ruined (mOsamu jendani), because of desires (AsatO), donning (dharinci) garbs (vEsamu) for the sake of (kOsamu) petty (vIsamulu) coins (kAsu).

C10 O My Mind! He alone is blessed, who -
sets his aim (lakshyamu peTTu) in (andu) the charming (sundara) Lord SrI rAma (rAmuniyandu),
who has been worshipped well (andamugA) by all (andaru) by chanting His names (nAmamu jEsina) (nAmamandaru).

C11 O My Mind! He alone is blessed, whoever (vADu evaDO) (vADevaDO) -
had earlier (or first) (munna) experienced (anubhavincukonna) (munnayanubhavincukonna) the excellent (sarvOnnatamau) comfort (sukhamu) after this much (inni) of effort (pATulaku).

C12 O My Mind! He alone is blessed, who -
without himself (tA) joining (kUDaka) the company (jata) of the people (janulatO) given to the quality of passion (rAjasa),
believes (nammu) in the resplendent (rAjillu) Lord SrI rAma - praised (nuta) (nutuni) by this tyAgarAja.

Notes –
Variations –
1 – gaDipina – gaDupu.
4 – pravRtti – pravarti : ‘pravarti’ is the Telugu form of the Sanskrit word ‘pravRtti’.
6 – dharinci – dhariyinci : ‘dharinci’ means to ‘put on (garb)’; ‘dariyinci’ means ‘to make one put on (garb)’. ‘dharinci’ seems to be appropriate in the present context.
7 – sarvOnnatamau – sarvOnnata.
General – The sandhi of ending word of each caraNa connecting to pallavi word 'ataDE' is not given uniformly in all the books. In some books no sandhi is given. In some books wrong sandhi is given.

References –
2 – tApamu – (three) afflictions - ‘tri-tApa’ or ‘tApatraya’ – adhyAtmika, Adhibhautika, Adhidaivika.
Also refer to SrI lalitA sahasra nAma – ‘tApa-trayAgni santapta samAhlAdana candrikA’ (357) (moonlight that gives joy to those who are burnt by the triple fires of misery – those generated by physical, mental and supernatural causes)

Comments -
3 – sallApamu – This word also means ‘conversing’. It is not clear whether SrI tyAgarAja means that the devotee should be talking sweetly to the Lord or about the Lord.
4 – pravRtti - Generally this means ‘action’ or ‘conduct’ ‘manifestation’ etc. In SrImad-bhagavad-gItA, Chapter 16, the following verse is relevant –

pravRttim ca nivRttiM ca janA na vidurAsurAH
na Saucam nApi cAcArO na satyaM tEshu vidyatE 7

“The persons of Asurika nature know not what to do and what to refrain from; neither is purity found in them nor good conduct, not truth.”
(Explanation) what to do and what to refrain from : What acts they should perform to achieve the end of man, nor what acts they should abstain from to avert evil. (Translation and notes by Swami Swarupananda)

However, in view of the previous word ‘mariyu’ (again) and following word ‘toalgincE’ (rid), SrI tyAgarAja seems mean – the ‘cycle of re-birth’. In the kRti ‘entani nE varNintu’ – rAga mukhAri, he praises Sabari as ‘punar-AvRtti rahita padamu pondina’ – (who attained the state of non-return). Accordingly, it has been translated here.
5 – vIsamulu – this may mean ‘one sixteenth part of anything’ or ‘a grain of gold equivalent in weight to a grain of rice’. However, if ‘kAsu vIsamulu’ is to be taken together, this may mean ‘aNA’ – one-sixteenth part of a rupee (used before 1957). Here, this has been translated as ‘petty coins'.
7 – sarvOnnatamau sukhamanubhavincukonna vADu – SrI tyAgarAja seems to refer to AnjanEya specifically.

In the kRti ‘cinna nADE nA ceyi paTTitivE’ – rAga kalAnidhi SrI tyAgarAja describes his agony caused in the absence of grace of the Lord.

O Ocean of virtues! O Excellent Lord! O Lord Praised by this tyAgarAja!
Accepting my numerous services, isn't it that You held my hand even my child-hood assuring me much - ‘I shall look after'?
However, at this moment, I do not know what You have decided – whether to abandon or govern me.
Please protect my honour.

Word-by-word Meaning

P Isn't it that You held (paTTitivE) my (nA) hand (ceyi) even in my child-hood (cinna nADE)?

A Accepting (kaikoni) my numerous (enna rAni) (literally uncountable) services (UDigamu) (rAniyUDigamu),
isn't it that You held my hand even my child-hood assuring (ani) me (nannu) much (entO) that ‘I shall look after' (pAlanamu sEtunu) (sEtunani)?

C However, at this (iTTi) moment (vELa), I do not know (teliya) what You have decided (encinAvO) (literally thought) –
whether (anO) to abandon (viDanADudAmu) (literally ‘let’s abandon’) (viDanaDudAmanO) or (ani) govern (ElukondAmu) (literally ‘let’s govern’) (ElukondAmaniyencinAvO) me; please protect (brOvavE) my honour (guTTu), O Ocean (vAri nidhi) of virtues (suguNa)!
O Excellent (goppa) Lord (daivamA)! O Lord Praised (nuta) by this tyAgarAja! isn't that You held my hand even my child-hood?

Notes –
Variations –
2 – nannu – ninnu : The words 'pAlanu sEtunu' (I shall protect) are that of Lord. The word 'entO' is not that of Lord. If the word 'entO' is not there, 'ninnu' could be added to the words of Lord 'ninnu pAlanamu sEtunu' (I shall protect You) – accordingly, 'ninnu' could be correct. However, as 'entO' is present, it (entO) has to be added to 'nannu'. Therefore, 'ninnu' may not be appropriate. Such problems arise in many kRtis because SrI tyAgarAja mixes direct and indirect speech freely.
4 – ElukondAmani – Elukondumani : It is an 'either – or' situation. 'encinAvO' is common for both situtations – 'viDanADudAmani encinAvO – ElukondAmani encinAvO'; however, SrI tyAgrAja has shortened the first option as 'viDanADudAmanO'. Accordingly, 'ElukondAmani' is appropriate.

References –
3 – viDanADudAmanO – 'whether to abandon'. In the kRti 'gAravimpa rAdA' – rAga ghaNTA, SrI tyAgarAja states 'konna sati rUpameTlunnA guNamunna celi celimi vIDaranna' - 'no matter how the look, of a women gotten in marriage, is, if she is virtuous, one would not leave her companionship'.

Comments -
1 - ceyi paTTitivE - The words 'ceyi paTTu', though may mean 'hold hand', it specifically signifies marriage. As seen from all the books, the traditional meaning given to these words in this kRti seems to be 'hold hand'. Accordingly, it has been adopted here. However, it would be more appropriate to translate the pallavi as 'Isn't it that You married me even in my child-hood?' Accordingly, this kRti is sung in 'nAyikA' bhAva (kAntAsakti – 'love of Lord as that of a wife' - as per definition in the nAarada bhakti sUutra.
5 – guTTu – this word generally means 'secret'. However, there are additional meanings – 'honour', 'reputation', 'public esteem'. In view of the ensuing word 'brOvavE' (protect), 'honour' and similar meanings are appropriate here.

Notes –
Variations –
2 – santANa – santrANa : In some books, the meaning derived for ‘santAna’ is ‘progeny’ or ‘wealth’. In the present context, ‘progeny’ does not suit. The Telugu and Sanskrit words ‘santAna’ does not have the meaning ‘wealth’.
‘santAna’ is one of the five celestial trees - kalpa vRksha. SrI tyAgarAja uses the names of the celestial trees – kalpa, mandAra, candana, etc in relation to the Lord. Therefore, ‘santAna’ has been adopted and translated in that sense.

References –

Comments -
1 – vAvulu – This word means ‘consanguineous’, ‘blood relation’. SrI tyAgarAja sarcastically asks the Lord whether his earlier devotees were blood-relations to Him that He protected them while ignoring him (tyAgarAja) because he is not related to Him.

2 – mandAkini – a tributary of gangA. However, it is another name of gangA. In SrImad-vAlmIki rAmAyaNa, ayOdhyA kANDa, Chapter 95, the river adjoining citrakUta (Chitrakoot) is also called mandAkini.
3 – sOmidamma – sOmi-dEv-amma – A title conferred on the wife of a sOma yAji.
4 – sOma yAji – The details of sOma sacrifice are contained in yajurvEda – kANDa 6 – Please visit site - http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/yv/yv06.htm
for the complete details of the sacrifice.

Comments -
5 – svargArhuDaunO – As per Hindu Traditions, no sacrificial rite can be performed without wife; therefore, if the wife is corrupt, the rite would be of no value.
This is a simile for the mind and body; they should function in unison, otherwise, hypocritic actions will not give the desired results. Pure and harmonious actions of mind-speech-body (manO-vAk-kAya) - known as tri-karaNa Suddhi - is emphasised for achieving any purpose.

evarani nirNayinciri-dEvAMRtavarshiNi

In the kRti ‘evarani nirNayincirirA’ – rAga dEvAMRtavarshiNi – nAdacintAmaNi, SrI tyAgarAja describes the meaning of the name ‘rAma’.

vitaraNa guNa 4tyAgarAja vinuta (evarani)

Gist
O Munificient Lord, praised by this tyAgarAja!
What did the most Eminent people determine as to who You are, and how did they worship You? – whether Lord Siva or Lord vishNu or brahmA or the Supreme Lord?
For the Siva mantra (OM namaSSivAya), ‘ma’ is the soul; for the vishNu mantra (OM namO nArAyanAya), ‘rA’ is the soul; I salute the great personages who understand this detail.

Word-by-word Meaning

P What did the most eminent (varulu) people (nara) determine (nirNayincirirA) as to who (evaru) You are (ani) (varulevarani)? And, how (eTla) did they worship (ArAdhincirirA) You (ninnu) (ninneTlArAdhincirirA)?

A What did the most Eminent people determine as to who You (ninnu) are –
whether (anO) Lord Siva (SivuDu) (SivuDanO) or (anO) Lord vishNu (mAdhavuDu) (mAdhavuDanO) or (anO) brahmA – One seated (bhavuDu) (bhavuDanO) in Lotus (kamala) or (anO) the Supreme (para) Lord (brahmamu) (brahmamanO)?
And, how did they worship You?

C For the Siva mantra (mantramunaku) – (OM namaSSivAya) - ‘ma’ is the soul (jIvamu); for the vishNu (mAdhava) mantra (mantramunaku) –(OM namO nArAyanAya) – ‘rA’ is the soul (jIvamu);
I salute (mrokkeda) the great personages (ghanulaku) who understand (telisina) this (I) (jIvamuyI) detail (vivaramu);
O Munificient Lord (vitaraNa guNa) (literally having quality of munificience), praised (vinuta) by this tyAgarAja! What did the most eminent people determine as to who You are? And, how did they worship You?

Notes –
Variations –
1 – nara varu(levarani) –nara varu (evarani) – nara vara (evarani). If ‘nara varu’ is correct, then it could be connected to pallavi. If ‘nara vara’ is correct, then it should be treated as an epithet of Lord and cannot be connected to pallavi.
It is stated that Gopalakrishna Bharati (Tamil composer) – a contemporary of tyAgarAja visted latter and sang a song (sabhApatikku) eulogising Lord Siva – that there is no God equal to Lord Siva. It is stated that then and there, SrI tyAgarAja extempore composed this song. If this is true, then ‘nara varulu evarani’ would be the correct rendering.
2 – kamala bhavuDu –kamalA bhavuDu : kamalA bhavuDu is not correct.
3 – ma jIvanamu – mA jIvamu . From the discourse referred below, it is clear that the (second) syllable of ‘namaSSivAya’ is referred – ie ‘ma’ and not ‘mA’. Similarly, ‘rA’ is the second syllable of ‘nArAyaNAya’; there ‘rA jIvamu’ is correct.
4 – tyAgarAja vinuta – tyAgarAja vinuta ninnu

Comments -
There is a story about initiation of (the hunter who later became) vAlmIki by sage nArada. It is stated that he was so sinful that he could not repeat the mantra ‘rAma’; therefore, sage narada reversed it as ‘marA’ and asked him to repeat the same which when chanted repeatedly becomes ‘rAma’. Word-by-word Meaning

P O SrI raghuvara! realising (telisi) my (nA) plight (jAli) of being unable (lEni) to behold (kana) Your (nI) smiling (nagu) face (mOmu), can’t (rAdA) You protect (brOva) me (nannu)?

A O Lord who bore (dhara) mandara - king (rAja) of mountains (naga) on His back!
Aren’t (kArE) all (ella) those in Your (nIDu) retinue (parivArulu) (parivArulella) the ones (vAralu) who render (jEsE) proper (ogi) advice (bOdhana) to You? would they remain (uNDudurE) (unconcerned) like that (aTulu) (kArEyaTuluNDudurE)?
O SrI raghuvara! realising my plight of being unable to behold Your (nI) smiling face, can’t You protect me?

C Didn’t (lEDO) garuDa – King (rAju) of birds (khaga) - proceed (cana) fast or quickly (vEga) hearing (vini) your (nI) command (Anati) (nIyAnati)?
or, did he (garuDa) say (aninADO) that it is much (bahu) distance (dUrambu) (dUrambaninADO) from vaikuNTha (gagananiki) (literally sky) to the earth (ilaku) (gaganAnikilaku)?
O Supreme Lord (paramAtmA) who rules (ElE) the universe (jagamu) (jagamElE)! With whom else (evaritO) shall I (nE) complain (moralu iDudu) (moraliDudu)?
don’t cite (jUpaku) (literally show) pretexts (vaga); I can’t bear it (tALanu); please govern (ElukOrA) me (nannu) (nannElukOrA);
O Lord praised (nuta) by this tyAgarAja! O SrI raghuvara! realising my plight of being unable to behold Your (nI) smiling face, can’t You protect me?

Notes –
Variations
1 – brOva rAdA – brOvaga rAdA.
3 – aTuluNDudurE – aTuluNDudurA - iTuluNDadurA. The word ‘aTulu’ (that way) or ‘iTulu’ (this way) does not make much difference. However, the word ‘uNDudurE’ meaning ‘they will be like this’ and ‘uNDadurA’ meaning ‘it won't be like this’ are diametrically opposite.
In keeping with the previous phrase ‘ogi bOdhana jEsE vAralu kArE’ which is interrogatory, the context demands a question ‘would they be like this?’ Therefore, 'uNDudurE seem to be appropriate. The version 'aTuluNDadurA', (it won’t be like this) involves a change in the gender – from masculine plural to neuter singular. Therefore, it may not be appropriate.
6 – evaritO – evaritO nE.

References
4 - khaga rAju - The episode of gajEndra mOkshaM is implied here. As soon as the cry of gajEndra ‘O AdimUlaM’ was heard, the Lord immediately rushed on garuDa and saved gajEndra. Therefore, SrI tyAgarAja ridicules SrI rAma whether in his case garuDa has feigned his inability to take the Lord.

Comments -
2 – ogi – There are two similar words in telugu – ‘Ogi’ meaning ‘duly’ and ‘Ogu’ meaning ‘evil’, ‘wicked’; However, in all books, it is given as 'ogi' (short 'o'). Here, the word ‘ogi’ with meaning ‘duly’ has been adopted.
2 – bOdhana – this word has both positive and negative meanings. Accompanied by words like ‘tattva’ (tattva bOdhana) it will give positive meaning - ‘philosophical teaching’. On the other hand, when preceded by words like ‘evari’ (evari bOdhana), this will give a negative meaning – whose instigation. Therefore, in this case, the previous word being ‘duly’, ‘bOdhana’ has been taken in a positive sense as ‘advice’.
2 – ogi bOdhana jEsE vAralu kArE – Taking meaning ‘due advice’ for (ogi bOdhana), if the remaining words of translated as it is, it would simply mean, ‘they (Your retinue) are not the ones who would give due advice’. However, taking caraNa where garuDa’s case is cited, such a meaning militates against the sense of the kRti. Therefore, this is not an affirmative sentence, but interrogatory. Accordingly, if we translate, this would mean ‘Aren’t the people of Your retinue the ones who give due advice?’.
5 - jagamElE paramAtma - How is it possible for the Lord who wields power over the whole universe would not to know the plight of an individual? - this is what SrI tyAgarAja asks. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa would say ‘The mother is happy till the child is busy playing. But the moment she hears the cry of the child – either due to hunger or some other reason, she hurries to take care of the child’. In the kRti ‘sItA nAyaka’ – rAga rItigauLa, SrI tyAgarAja states ‘ingitamerigi...brOcu ... dora’ – Lord who protects understanding the indications or intentions (of the devotees).

The great harikathA exponent Sri TS Balakrishna Sastrigal attributes this kRti to the episode of vibhIshaNa’s surrender. This kRti does not name vibhIshaNa but all the circumstances aptly describe the episode. It is as if vibhIshaNa sang this kRti hearing which, the Lord declared his vow which is considered as SaraNAgati SAstRa by bhaktAs (vAlmIki rAmAyaNa – yuddha kaNDa) -

போக்குக் காட்டாதே; தாளேன்; என்னையாள்வாய்;
தியாகராசனால் போற்றப்பெற்றோனே!
உனது சிரித்த முகத்தினைக் காணவியலாத எனது
துயரறிந்து, என்னைக் காக்கலாகாதா, இரகுவரா?
