Notes –
Variations
3 – sumI – sumA. Both mean the same.

4 – arjuna ghanulella nutincu - sankrandanalu anayamu sEvincu : arjuna munulella nutincu - sankrandana ghanulella sEvincu : ‘munulella’ does not seem to be appropriate here. I think, probably, the wordings of first and second halves of the caraNa have been confused in the book.

5 – vinu – ninu - munu. In my opinion, ‘ninu’ and ‘munu’ are not appropriate in the present context. Therefore, ‘vinu’ has been adopted.

6 – vidyalandu – vidyalanella. In my opinion, ‘vidyalanella’ is not appropriate here. Therefore, ‘vidyalandu’ has been adopted.

7 – tyAgarAju bhAvincu – tyAgarAjupAsincu.

References
4 - arjuna – SrI tyAgarAja seems to have included arjuna – the third of panca pANDava. As this kRti is forming part of nauka caritra where SrI kRshNa is the Hero and the Lord being friend and benefactor of arjuna, the reference to arjuna is obvious. His praise of Lord in bhagavat gItA – 11th Chapter is proof enough.

There was one more arjuna – kArtavIryArjuna.

Comments -
1 – hari hari – This is an interjection meaning ‘alas’; however, the present context does not permit such a meaning.

2 – nIyokka – Here, the word ‘okka’ (one) has no special significance. This is the way of speaking.

This is part of the dance-drama ‘nauka caritraM’ – The Boat Story.

Background – The gOpis meet kRshNa at the yamunA river and travel in a boat happily. In their excitement of meeting kRshNa, gOpis become proud thinking that kRshNa is their property. In order to remove their proudiness, kRshNa creates a storm in the river and as the boat is tossed about, it develops a crack and water starts entering the boat. kRshNa feigns illness and the gOpis become desperate as to how they would reach shore and ensure safety of kRshNa. In order to save the boat, listening to the words of kRshNa, they take off their blouses to plug the hole. But, as these also were washed off, kRshNa asks them to remove their upper garments to plug the hole in the boat. Reluctantly, gOpis do so. Even as these are washed away, they become totally desperate and ultimately surrender themselves to the Lord. In this song, gOpis ask kRshNa to give them His lotus feet. As gOpis stand meditating on the Lord, storm and rain abate and gOpis get back their clothes.
