Dear Sri Govindan

Anupallavi - ghana tamAla nIla – It seems that a variation is “ghana samAna nIla” meaning blue coloured like a raincloud.

Dear Sri Govindaswamy,

None of the books I refer have given any variation for word 'tamAla'. It is very clear.

Probabbly, those who don't know the meaning of 'tamAla' would have changed it to 'samAna'.

'tamAla' is correct.

V Govindan

Dear Sri Govindan,
I too believe it could have been only "ghana samAna nIla". Sri Thyagaraja already uses "ghana sama nIla" in other instances eg: in tava dAsOham. The DKP/DKJ school sings it as ghana samAna nila too. Tamala may be correct in Telugu but it seems out of place here. Is it a case of printer's devil that's propagated on and on?
On another note, my most sincere thanks for your excellent work, an amazing resource for the rest of us!
Regards, Saranyan

Sri Saranyan,
What is sung by any school is a different matter from what is correct. Though I am not here to certify the correctness or otherwise of paddhati,'tamAla' is often used in literature as comparison for the colour of vishNu and Parvathi (brother-sister). This word is found in other kRtis and stotras also. This tree is known as தமாலம் or பச்சிலை மரம் in Tamil whose bark is darkish. You may type Xanthochymus pictorius and find the tree's image.
With best wishes,
V Govindan
