O Lord rAma! O Lord praised by this tyAgarAja!
- Why wouldn’t You bestow on me the same kind of wisdom as that of great people? Where else could I go?
- Like all others, I too have been prattling, jumping here and there;
- Isn’t it that wisdom has become like an unreachable fruit?
- Even after knowing –
- true philosophical meanings of vEdas and SAstras,
- undifferentiated vEdAnta, and
- secrets of science of nAda (nAdOpAsana),
- why wouldn’t You bestow on me the same kind of wisdom truly like that of great people?

O Lord (nAtha) praised (nuta) by this tyAgarAja!
why wouldn’t You bestow on me the same kind of wisdom truly (nijamuga) like that of great people? O Lord rAma! Where else could I go?
Notes –
Variations –
2 – iyyavu – Iyavu.
6 – vEdAntamulu – vEdAntamunu. In keeping with other similar words 'tatvArthamulu', 'marmambulu', here also 'vEdAntamulu' has been adopted.
References –
4 – anda rAni paNDu – Aesop’s Fables - 'Grapes and the Fox' seems to be referred here.
5 – bhEda – dvaita as propounded by madhvAcArya is considered as bhEda vAda - bhEda vAda and madhvAcArya
Comments -
1 – peddalu – Here this would refer to nArada and the like.
3 – dATi dATi vadariti – The exact meaning of this phrase is not clear. From the context, it has been translated as ‘prattled jumping here and there’.
7 – nAda vidya – In the present context, it is taken to mean ‘nAdOpAsana’ as practised by those knowledgeable in music. However, ‘nAda vidyA’ has a much wider connotation which is dealt in SrI vidyA and other Agama systems.
8 – telisi – In some books, this word has been attributed to the great people (paddalu) (like the great people who know true meanings of vEda, SAstra etc....). However, the flow of the language seems to point otherwise. Particularly, the word ‘nijamuga’ seems to indicate that ‘true wisdom’ is something more than what is intellectually perceived; it is the grace of the Lord which SrI tyAgarAja yearns. Further, if 'telisi' is to be attributed to 'great people', then the word should be 'telisina'.

Dear Sri Govindan
You have mentined as “dATi dATi vadariti – The exact meaning of this phrase is not clear.”
Can we take dATi to mean ‘to cross’ and the last word to be ‘vadaliti’.
If so, will the meaning be “ Just like others I also tried to acquire knowledge and gave up after crossing a few of the subjects. This has become an unreachable fruit (கிட்டாக்கனி)”.
Regards
Govindaswmy
Dear Sri Govindaswamy,
I have checked all the books; it is given as 'vadariti' and the meaning derived also is that of 'vadariti'.
'dATi dATi' seems to be colloquial usage meaning of which is not very clear. However, there seems to be no doubt about the word 'vadaru'.
Regards,
V Govindan
