O Lord of all Gods! O Lord who destroys sins! O Lord of beautiful form! O Lord who is Consort of sItA! O Lord rAghava! O Lord rAma! O Lord praised by this devout tyAgarAja!
- If You appear before me at every step, which of Your property would be lost?
- But for what is pre-ordained, I shall not exceed my limits; knowing my ability, will I allow myself to be deceived? (OR)
- But for what is pre-ordained, is it in my capacity to exceed my limits? will I allow myself to be deceived knowingly?
- Is it proper to look at me equally (with others)? Please understand my exigencies; I won't ask for boons; please listen to my appeal.
- This indeed is the opportune moment to protect me; my mind shall not beseech other Gods; is it not known to You? What kind of valour is this?
- If You show such an unprecedented unconcern towards me, would celestials and even demons appreciate? Why this wickedness now?

Notes –
Variations
2 – taramu – taramA : If 'taramA' is correct, anupallavi would be translated differently. Both versions are given.
3 – mOsa pOdunA – mOsamu pOdunA : ‘mOsa’ is the appropriate word and has been adopted accordingly.
Comments -
1 – sommulu Emi pOvurA – 'which of your property would be lost?' - this is more of an assertion that ‘none of Your property would be lost’.
4 – tarAna – this word seems to be declension of ‘taramu’. However, the form is not clear. In some books, this word has been translated as ‘precedent’. Though such a meaning fits in the context, no such meaning is found in the dictionary.
5 – metturA – this is how it is given in all the books and the meaning derived is (would they) 'approve', 'appreciate', 'applaud'. The corresponding telugu word for all the three words is 'meccu' and it would decline as 'meccudurA' in order to convey the said meaning. Therefore, it is not clear whether 'meccudurA' can be used as 'metturA'.
6 – harAmi – As per telugu dictionary, the meaning is ‘wicked’, ‘vicious’. However, this is a urdu word and, in North India, this word is considered an abuse. This word is derived from Arabic root word ‘harAm’ (English ‘harem’) and means ‘illegitimate child’.

Dear Sri Govindan
AP- Can nudiTi vrAta kAni be taken as a separate sentence ,meaning ‘Let this (anything) be the writing on my forehead’?
C3- metturA – I think that this is colloquial form of meccuturA
Regards
Govindaswamy
Dear Sri Govindaswamy,
Re : nuduTi vrAta - please tanslate the whole anupallavi with your version. Let us see if it fits. I have checked the books. I have gone by the traditional meaning - as given in the books.
Re :metturA - I am clueless whether 'metturA' is the colloquial version of 'meccudurA'.
Regards,
V Govindan
Dear Sri Govindan
AP – I was wondering if the meaning can be taken a below.
“(Let this disappointment of Your not manifesting in front of me) be my fate. (nuduTi vrAta kAni). (In spite of it) I shall not exceed my limits.”
Regards
Govindaswamy
Dear Sri Govindaswamy,
"disappointment of Your not manifesting in front of me" is only a surmise. May be what you say is right - probaly that is what Sri Tyagaraja intends. But, there is no direct reference to it.
You seem to have translated 'kAni' as 'in spite of it'.
Let your clarification remain for the benefit of viewers.
Regards,
V Govindan
Dear Sri Govindan
What I intended to convey was “ whether ‘kAni’ can be taken tomean “இது என் தலையெழுத்தாகட்டும்”.In that case it becomes a complete statement by itself. “In spite of it I will not exceed my limits” is the next sentence
Regards
Govindaswamy
Excellent work. I am amazed to go through this work. As such, I am also an ardent admirer of Tyagaraja's works. Who will not be.
