cinna nADE-kalAnidhi

In the kRti ‘cinna nADE nA ceyi paTTitivE’ – rAga kalAnidhi SrI tyAgarAja describes his agony caused in the absence of grace of the Lord.

P cinna nADE nA 1ceyi paTTitivE

A enna rAni(y)UDigamu kaikoni
entO 2nannu pAlanamu sEtun(a)ni (cinna)

C iTTi vELa 3viDanADudAm(a)nO
4ElukondAm(a)ni(y)encinAvO teliya
5guTTu brOvavE suguNa vAri nidhi
goppa daivamA tyAgarAja nuta (cinna)

Gist
O Ocean of virtues! O Excellent Lord! O Lord Praised by this tyAgarAja!
Accepting my numerous services, isn't it that You held my hand even my child-hood assuring me much - ‘I shall look after'?
However, at this moment, I do not know what You have decided – whether to abandon or govern me.
Please protect my honour.

Word-by-word Meaning

P Isn't it that You held (paTTitivE) my (nA) hand (ceyi) even in my child-hood (cinna nADE)?

A Accepting (kaikoni) my numerous (enna rAni) (literally uncountable) services (UDigamu) (rAniyUDigamu),
isn't it that You held my hand even my child-hood assuring (ani) me (nannu) much (entO) that ‘I shall look after' (pAlanamu sEtunu) (sEtunani)?

C However, at this (iTTi) moment (vELa), I do not know (teliya) what You have decided (encinAvO) (literally thought) –
whether (anO) to abandon (viDanADudAmu) (literally ‘let’s abandon’) (viDanaDudAmanO) or (ani) govern (ElukondAmu) (literally ‘let’s govern’) (ElukondAmaniyencinAvO) me; please protect (brOvavE) my honour (guTTu), O Ocean (vAri nidhi) of virtues (suguNa)!
O Excellent (goppa) Lord (daivamA)! O Lord Praised (nuta) by this tyAgarAja! isn't that You held my hand even my child-hood?

Notes –
Variations –
2 – nannu – ninnu : The words 'pAlanu sEtunu' (I shall protect) are that of Lord. The word 'entO' is not that of Lord. If the word 'entO' is not there, 'ninnu' could be added to the words of Lord 'ninnu pAlanamu sEtunu' (I shall protect You) – accordingly, 'ninnu' could be correct. However, as 'entO' is present, it (entO) has to be added to 'nannu'. Therefore, 'ninnu' may not be appropriate. Such problems arise in many kRtis because SrI tyAgarAja mixes direct and indirect speech freely.
4 – ElukondAmani – Elukondumani : It is an 'either – or' situation. 'encinAvO' is common for both situtations – 'viDanADudAmani encinAvO – ElukondAmani encinAvO'; however, SrI tyAgrAja has shortened the first option as 'viDanADudAmanO'. Accordingly, 'ElukondAmani' is appropriate.

References –
3 – viDanADudAmanO – 'whether to abandon'. In the kRti 'gAravimpa rAdA' – rAga ghaNTA, SrI tyAgarAja states 'konna sati rUpameTlunnA guNamunna celi celimi vIDaranna' - 'no matter how the look, of a women gotten in marriage, is, if she is virtuous, one would not leave her companionship'.

Comments -
1 - ceyi paTTitivE - The words 'ceyi paTTu', though may mean 'hold hand', it specifically signifies marriage. As seen from all the books, the traditional meaning given to these words in this kRti seems to be 'hold hand'. Accordingly, it has been adopted here. However, it would be more appropriate to translate the pallavi as 'Isn't it that You married me even in my child-hood?' Accordingly, this kRti is sung in 'nAyikA' bhAva (kAntAsakti – 'love of Lord as that of a wife' - as per definition in the nAarada bhakti sUutra.
5 – guTTu – this word generally means 'secret'. However, there are additional meanings – 'honour', 'reputation', 'public esteem'. In view of the ensuing word 'brOvavE' (protect), 'honour' and similar meanings are appropriate here.

Dear Sri Govindan

Re : guTTu

I was heard this song today and was pondered over it.

You have given that this word normally means secret. You have taken guTTu with brOvavE. If we take teliya with guTTu does it not give the meaning that I do not know the secret of your heart (i.e) whether you wanted to save me or not. In this casw brOvavE will stand by itself.

Dear Sri Govindaswami,

The placement of word 'teliya' and the form of the word, do not allow it to be joined to 'guTTu'. I normally take into account the traditional meaning attached to words from the books. Accordingly, in the book of Sri TK Govinda Rao, it has been translated 'self respect'.

Therefore, in all probability, 'guTTu' should be attached to 'brOvavE'. However, I cannot definitely say whether I am right or not. I have given my point of view in the Comments. Let the readers make their own assessment as to what is right.

Regards,
V Govindan

Dear Sri Govindan

I do agree that guTTu carries the meaning honour as well. But in traditional speech and writing this carries the meaning ‚secret’. My search in dictionary has produced this result (edited by me).

ఇంటిగుట్టు a family secret.
గుట్టు (p. 0373) [ guṭṭu ] guṭṭu. [Tel.] n. A secret. మర్మము. The real state, reputation, honor, public esteem

వళవు (p. 1149) [ vaḷavu ] or ఒళవు vaḷavu. (Kan.) n. A stratagem, trick, device. A secret. ఉపాయము, గుట్టు, మర్మము, బండవలము, తంత్రము.

All Indian languages except Sanskrit to some extent) do not have punctuation marks. Splitting up the words in poetry is a tough job. Even then there is only one meaning. I think this song gives the scope for both interpretations.
1. iTTi vELa viDanADudAmanO, ElukondAmaniyencinAvO ? teliya guTTu. brOvavE!
2. iTTi vELa viDanADudAmanO, ElukondAmaniyencinAvO, teliya. guTTu brOvavE!

Musicians sing guTTu brOvavE with number of sangatis.

Dear Sri Govindan
Instead of suguNa vAri nidhi should it not be suguNa vAridhi? Does not suguNa vAri nidhi give the meaning 'wealth of virtuous people?

Sir,
I have referred to Sanskrit Dictionary. vAridhi and vAri nidhi - both mean 'ocean'. Either may be correct. But such a variation 'vAridhi' does not seem to be given in any book.
