Dear Sri Govindan
I have heard people telling that tyAgarAja used pun in this song by indirectly referring to his parents rAmabrahmam and sitAlakshmi.
After calling rAma as father why is he calling lakSmaNa, Satrughna and bharata as brothers.
Is there any hidden meaning?

Dear Govindaswamy,
SrI tyAgarAja mentions name of his father 'rAma brahma' in tbe bilahari kRti 'dorakunAyiTuvaNTi sEva'. Other than this, he mentions name of parents in the dialogue of prahlAda bhakti vijayaM, which I am yet to translate.

SrI tyAgarAja also mentions AnjanEya, garuDa and brahmA (dhAta) as his brothers along with bharata and lakshmaNa. How this could be accounted for?

People make all sorts of comments without taking into account the whole kRti and also tearing words apart from the context. In this case, the comment of 'pun' may be taken light-heartedly.

Just one question regarding the caraNam:

- Shouldn't it be 'tAta bharatAdulu' (bharata and others addressed endearingly) as opposed to 'dhata' (brahma) as you explain?? 'tAta' also rhymes better with the preceding 'vAta', does it not?

Sri Satyarthi,

Your doubt is valid because brahma (dhAta) does not rhyme well with Anjaneya, Lakshmana, Satrughna and Bharata. Further, in the caraNam, he mentions paramESa. Therefore, brahma would better fit in this category. However, I have referred to all the books having Sanskritised version - it is clearly mentioned as 'dhAta' and not 'tAta'. However, the Tamil version is a little doubtful because Tamil does not have hard consonants and dhAta and tAta will be written similarly in that language.

In one of the books, jAmbavan is mentioned in place of brahmA. This could be acceptable as proper because jAmbavan is considered elderly person.

You may kindly clarify whether 'tAta' has any other meaning than grand father - you are mentioning 'endearing'. However, the Telugu dictionary does not have any such meaning. It (Telugu Dictionary) mentions brahmA as one of the meanings of 'tAta'.

I also agree that from prAsa - anuprAsa angle, 'tAta' suits well.

If 'tAta' has the meaning 'endearing', then it would have been better if it is translated as suggested by you.

However, in the absence of any different version or meaning (other than jAmbavAn), I am unable to change the kRti wording. Your comments are there available along with the kRti. Readers may make their own decision. I will leave it to them.

Meaning for dhAta is given as “ధాత (p. 0622) [ dhāta ] dhāta. [Skt.] n. One who saves. రక్షించువాడు. Brahma, the Creator, బ్రహ్మ”.
Can we take this this special adjective (shown in bold letters by me) in praise has been given to Bharatha among those listed in Anupallavi. I have another reason for considering this to be an adjective. Brahma does not fit into the group listed in Anupallavi though He belongs to the group in CharaNam.
After calling Rama and Sitha as parents Thyagaraja calling Bharatha and others as brothers is a slight misfit. They are his Uncles (చిన్నాయనలు).

Tata could be the proper word.

Tata is a word used in Sanskrit in other contexts as one who is dear
Ex.
partha naiveha namutra
vinasas tasya vidyate
na hi kalyana-krt kascid
durgatim tata gacchati

Gita ch. 6 sloka 40
Tata is grandfather only in Telugu.

The tatachary's of this world take the name from an incident where Lord venkateshwara is claimed to have appeared as a boy to a great devotee and called him "Tata" or a dear one.
