Notes –
Variations -
1 – jUDumI – jUDumi : As ‘jUDumI’ is more appropriate, the same has been adopted.
2 – krE – krI : ‘krE kaNTa’ means ‘side glance’; ‘krI kaNTa’ means ‘downcast glance’. As ‘downcast’ means ‘dejection’, this is not meant here. Therefore, ‘krE kaNTa’ is the appropriate word, and has accordingly been adopted.
References -
4 – ala nADu saumitri - The episode referred here is that when the trio (SrI rAma, sItA and lakshmaNa) reached pancavaTi, SrI rAma asked lakshmaNa to build a cottage for their living. When lakshmaNa finished the job, SrI rAma was so impressed by his dedication and craftsmanship that He (SrI rAma) embraced him and praised him in front of sItA. SrI tyAgarAja visualizes as to how lakshmaNa would have felt then. The relevant SlOkas in the vAlmIki rAmAyaNa – AraNyakANDa, Chapter 15 are -
prItOsmi tE mahat karma kRtam-idam prabhO
pradEyO yan-nimittam tE parishvangO mayA kRtaH

“O lakshmaNa! I am pleased with you. You have accomplished this great work, and, as a reward for which, I embrace you. You being the knower of (my) feelings, grateful and what is right, (I consider that) with you as his son, our pious minded father is not dead. (From the manner you look after our welfare, I feel as if our father is not dead but present here in your form.)”

3 – taNTa – this is how it is given in all the books. However, the correct word seems to be ‘taNTA’. ‘tappu taNTalu’ as a single phrase is not found in the Telugu Dictionary.

Dear Sri Govindan
krE ka(ga)nTa - You have given detialed explanation that krE is the right word. But everyone sings if as krIkanTa only. I have never come across krE. The following comments of Sri K.S.R.Prasad in his book may be of interest to you and other followers of this blog.
"Interpretations for different looks (coopulu) can be different for different poets. ‘ krindu + kannu=kreegannu = downcast glance’. tyaagaraaja has used it here for ‘beneficent’ look. ‘Oracoopu’, according to him is a ‘sidelong glance’, which denotes a sort of carelessness. (as in ‘Oracoopu CoocEdi nyaayamaa kannaDagauLa)’ & ‘O raajeevaaksha (aarabhi')’. (However, ‘OrakaNTa CooCu’ has been used by other poets for a ‘favouarble look’ too. Any way, we can get a hint of the prevalent mood out of the context itself, whether it is a downcast glance or sidelong glance.”
In anupallavi you have taken 'bAgu kAni ' to mean 'other than the privilege of remaining (shining) as Your servitor. You have taken bAgu as a noun to mean privilege.
He has taken bAgu + kAni as adjective qualifying tppu tanTalu. The meaning given is 'despicable' The meaning given by him seems to fit in the sentence construction better.

Govindaswamy
Dear Sri Govindaswami,
The problem with 'kRI' and 'kRE' is that it is used interchangeably by SrI tyAgarAja in some kRtis.
Regarding 'bAgu kAni' - I fail to understand as to how this will qualify 'tappu taNTalu'. Because, first, 'baNTuDai velayu' will stand alone without completing meaning if we take out 'bAgu kAni'. Secondly, how there can be differentiation as 'good mistake' and 'bad mistake'. 'bAgu kAni tappu taNTalu' is wrong.
Regards,
V Govindan
