In the kRti ‘nADADina mATa’ – rAga janaranjani (tALa miSra cApu), SrI tyAgarAja pleads with the Lord to keep His word of protecting him.

O My Father Lord SrI rAma! O Lord worshipped by this tyAgarAja!
  • After reflecting for one year, didn’t You say that -
    • ‘I shall gracefully protect him who is not separated from me’;
    • ‘I shall deflect the danger that comes to your head, towards your headgear’;
    • ‘I shall be caught in the net of one who trusts me lovingly’; and
    • ‘here (on the Earth), I shall make you to float in the ocean of devotion’?

  • Now, You should not break the promise made by You in my young days.

After reflecting (tala pOsi) for one year (EDAdi nADuga), didn’t You say (palkitivE) that (ani) -
‘I shall gracefully (pODimiga) protect (kApADudunu) (kApADudunani) him (vAni) who is not separated (eDa bAyani) from me’;
‘I shall deflect (jEtu) (literally do) the danger (bAdha) (literally difficulty) that comes (vaccina) to your head (talaku), towards your headgear (tala pAga) (pAgaku)’;
‘I shall be caught (taguludu) in the net (valalOna) of one (vAni) who trusts (nammina) me lovingly (valaci)’; and that (ani)
‘here (on the Earth) (ila) I shall make (jEtunu) (jEtunani) you to float (Ida) in the ocean (sAgaramu) (sAgaramIda) of devotion (bhakti)’?
O My Father Lord SrI rAma! Now, You should not break the promise made by You in my young days (cinna nADu).


Notes –
Variations
2 – kApADudunani – kApADuduvani : From the flow of language ‘kApADudunani’ seems appropriate.

4 – talapAgaku jEtu – talapAgaku cEDu : In the present context, ‘cEDu’ might not be appropriate.

Comments -
1 – EDAdi nADuga – In one book, it has been translated as ‘You should not go back on the assurance given one year back’. ‘nADuga’ indicates a continuity of action for the period referred’ (from that day). Accordingly, ‘EDAdi nADuga’ would mean ‘for one year’. Further, anupallavi terminates with ‘cinna’ which, when added to pallavi, would become ‘cinna nADADina mATa’ – meaning ‘what You said in my young days’. (Please refer to kRti ‘cinna nADE nA ceyyi paTTitivE’ – ‘You held my hand in my childhood itself’). Therefore, there are two conflicting periods – for one year – from childhood. As ‘EDAdi nADuga’ is not in the appropriate form to translate as ‘one year ago’, ‘cinna nADADina’ has been taken as appropriate version.

However, then ‘EDAdi nADuga’ stands alone. It does not go well to join to ‘eDabAyani vAni’ (one who is not separated). God would not lay down any specific periodicity – ‘(I shall protect) one who is not separated from me for one year’ – is absurd. Therefore, ‘eDa bAyani vAni’ would be translated as ‘one who is never separated’. Consequently, ‘EDAdi nADuga’ (for one year) does not make any sense by itself. Therefore, ‘EDAdi nADuga’ has been added to ‘tala pOsi’ in caraNa in order to complete the sense, ‘EDAdi nADuga tala pOsi palkitivE’ ‘You said after reflecting for one year’.

Accordingly, anupallavi and caraNam have been combined for the purpose of translation. However, there is still some conflict with ‘cinna nADu’ – something is amiss.

However, it is possible to translate ‘EDAdi nADuga eDa bAyani vAni’ as ‘I am not separated from You for the past one year’. But, as brought out earlier, SrI tyAgarAja states that ‘cinna nADE nA ceyyi paTTitivE’ – ‘You held my hand even in my childhood’. Therefore, to say that ‘I am not separated from You for one year’ does not sound convincing.

3 - talaku vaccina bAdha talapAgaku – this is a saying in tamizh ‘talaikku vandadu talaippAgaiyODu pOnadu’ – derived from the episode in mahAbhArata, karNa parva – Chapter 90 when, during the war, karNa aimed a weapon (astra) at the chest of arjuna – to kill him; but Lord kRshNa – the charioteer - pressed the chariot into the ground by his toe and the weapon missing the target took away the crown of arjuna; thus he was saved from any harm.
