  • At this time, wouldn’t Your wife speak to You to show Your might?
  • I do not know as to how my disgrace seemed to Your mind.

I do not know as to how (eTTu) my (nA) disgrace (raTTu) seemed (tOcenO) (literally occurred) to Your (nI) mind (manasuku) (manasukeTTu);
O Lord praised (nuta) by this tyAgarAja! O Lord of Emperors and Kings! has the thought not arisen in You mind for protecting (rakshincuTaku) me?

1 – A different version of the caraNa, as given below, is found in some books. However, the meaning derived in the said books is the same as given above.

This version is very confused; neither the words are cogent nor they are of appropriate form to derive any meaning. This is another instance to establish that the kRtis of SrI tyAgarAja have been extensively corrupted – within a span of 100 odd years.

The version of caraNam, asgiven in TTD book is slightly different from what you have given and is as below.
iTTivELa nIkeTTu tOcunani illAlitO muccaTalADedu
raTTu nI manasu keTTutOcenO rakshincuTaku tyAgarAjanuta.

My attempt to translate the meaning is given below.

When we are suffering at present (iTTIvELa), without feeling for the same (nIkeTTU tOcunani), You are indulging in amorous small talk (muccaTaDedu) with your wife (illAlitO). What did You think of (nI manasukeTTu tOcenO) of our problems?
rakshincuTaku joins with pallavi.

Dear Sri Govindaswamy,
I have not seen more absurd Telugu than the one given in the caraNa. From various interactions with you pointing out the variations given in the book of TTD, I am of firm opinion, the greatest culprit in corrupting the kRtis of Tyagaraja is the author of the TTD Book. Posterity will decide on this abuse of name of TTD for introducing absurd versions in tyAgarAja kRtis.
