Gist
O Lord rAma! O Merciful Lord!

Is it fair to be obstinate to talk to me?

Is it fair to be obstinate to talk to me who has held Your Feet, considering You alone as my constant companion (like a shadow) and being endowed with devotion to You?

Isn't it that when AnjanEya – born of Wind God as an aspect of Lord Siva and also being erudite in all subjects - saluted You (and enquired about You), You asked lakshmaNa - your younger brother - to convey the details to him?

Therefore, is it fair to be obstinate to talk to this tyAgarAja even when he talks to You?

Word-by-word Meaning

P O Lord (ayya) rAma (rAmayya)! Is it fair to be obstinate (mODi galadE) to talk (mATalu Ada) (mATalADa) to me?

A O Lord rAma! Is it fair to be obstinate to talk (mATalADa) to me (nAtO) who has held (paTTina) Your Feet (pAdamu),
considering You alone (nIvE) as (anucunu) (nIvEyanucunu) my constant companion (tODu nIDa) (like a shadow) and being endowed (kUDina) with devotion (bhakti) to You?

C O Merciful Lord (sadayuDa)! Isn't it (gAkanu) that when AnjanEya – born (sambhavuDu) of Wind God (ASuga) (literally quick moving) (sadayuDASuga) as an aspect (amSuDai) of Lord Siva (Sankara) (SankarAmSuDai) and also being erudite in all subjects (caduvulu anni telisi) (literally one who has mastered all) (caduvulanni) - saluted (mrokka) You (and enquired about You),
You asked (jEsitivi) (literally do) lakshmaNa - your younger brother (tammuni) - to convey (palka) the details (kadalu) (literally stories) to him?
therefore, is it fair to be obstinate to talk (mATalADa) to this tyAgarAja (tyAgarAju) even when he talks (ADina) to You?

Notes –
Variations –
1 – galadE – galadA.

References –
2 – Sankara amSuDu – The story of how AnjanEya came to be described as a portion of Lord Siva is given in the Story of Hanuman

3 – tammuni palka – In their first meeting between AnjanEya and SrI rAma, the latter, while appreciated the scholarship of AnjanEya, did not directly talk to him, but asked lakshmaNa to speak to him. Please refer to SrImad vAlmIki rAmAyaNa – kishkindA kANDa – Chapter 3.

Comments -
4 – tyAgarAju ADina – From the example cited (rAma not speaking directly to AnjanEya), it is understood that SrI tyAgarAja wants that the Lord should respond to him also even if not directly.

Hey this is AWESOME! You are doing a great job! :) I am a HUGE fan of the saint-poet Thyagaraja! :) Are you a singer too?

I've a blog too (srividyaangara.blogspot.com)! Please do visit it!

Could you also please help me out with a query I have? Do you know of any Thyagaraja kriti that is dedicated to the Sun god? I'm looking for some sun-centric kritis and it would be great if you could help me out!

Thank you,
Srividya.

Hi, I think you're doing a GREAT job posting all these kritis online. Thank you for the effort!

Could you please help me with this query? Did Thyagaraja write any kritis on the Sun god, exclusively? I'm looking for some sun-centric keertanas/kritis and could you please help me out?

My blog is srividyaangara.blogspot.com. Please do visit!

Thanks,
Srividya.

Dear Sri Govindan
Re : ADa mODi

While reading this again I had the following idea. In caraNa tyagarAja mentions that rAmA did not directly rply to AnjanEya, in spite of the latter’s high qualifications. Hence I feel that what tyAgarAjA wants to convey that it is not unusual that rAmA does not deign to talk to him. I wonder whether my interpretation makes sense.

gAkanu in caraNam can mean ‘therefore’. I took galadE in pallavi as an emphatic statement of ‘it is there’ , உள்ளதே.

Dear Sri Govindaswamy,
Re 'galadE', please see the following given in the Telugu Dictionary -

ఏ [ ē ] ē. An affix denoting denial or negation. అది నీకు తగునే does it befit you? no.
Accordingly, the meaning has been derived as 'is it fair to be obstimate?'

Dear Sri Govindan
I have seen the extract of dictionary explaining ఏ .
While agreeing with this, while speaking, depending on the emphasis ‘  అది నీకు తగునే it can also mean ‘that will suit You (very well)’.
அது உனக்குத் தகுமே/பொருந்துமே. If తగునే is taken as తగును +ఏ it is affirmative. If it is taken తగునా +ఏ it is interrogative.
I found the following meanings for 'ఏ ' (E) in a Telugu dictionary. My understanding /translation is subject to correction.
1.     questioning 2) appreciation 3) interrogation 4) variation 5) excess 6) expressing sadness 7) expressing worry 8) pleading

You have taken galadE as an interrogation. I understand it is galadu+E
(kaddu / unnadi/undi + 'ఏ = kadde/unnadE உள்ளது + ஏ = உள்ளதே/ உள்ளதுவே). (நீ அவ்வாறு இருப்பதில் வியப்பில்லை என்று நான் பொருள் கொண்டேன்).
Your interpretation is “ therefore, Is it fair to be obstinate to talk to me. This will mean that tyAgaAjA thought that he was greater than AnjanEya?

I found he following variationsinTTD Book.

అ.ప : తోడునీడ నీవే యనుచు భక్తితో
గూడి నీ పదము పట్టిన నాతో (ఆ)
thODunIDa nIvE yanucu bhakhitO
gUDi nI padamu paTTina nAtO (A)

చ: ...కదలు తమ్ముని బల్కనుగా జేసితివి
గాకను త్యాగరాజు డేపాటి మాట (లాడ)
ca : … kadalu tammuni balkanugA jEsitivi
gAkanu tyAgarAju dEpATi maTa (LA)
The meaning given is somewhat like this.
“ You did not talk directly even to AnjanEya. Are you going to talk to me?”.
“tyAgarAju dEpATi” conveys the meaning 'what is tyAgarAjA compared to AnjanEya'.
In a Tamil book it is given as ADa mODi galadA (ஆடமோடி கலதா). I have heard this version also.

Dear Sri Govindaswamy,

I have heard Sri Balamurali Krishna singing the kRti as 'galadA'. As this word 'galadA' is found in some books also, I have given it as a variation.

However, as 'galadE' is found in more number of books, I have taken that as correct and translated it keeping in view the traditional meaning attached to the word as contained in the books.

Whether Tyagaraja feels that he is greater than AnjanEya or not, is a matter of interpretation of the word 'galadE'. I have tried, as far as possible to go by the traditional meanings attached to the kRtis. Wherever, they are absolutely against the spirit of the kRti, I have modified them, but given a suitable note for every such change in the meaning.

Regarding TTD version, in the book of TKG also, it is given as 'tyAgarAjEpATi'. But as this is given only as an alternative, I have not taken it into consideration because it is not found in any other book.

As your views and my reasons are very well in the open, let the readers make their own decision as to what could be correct, and what is not.

Regards,
V Govindan

I think 'sadaya' in the Telugu script caraNam and dEvanAgari script caranNam should be 'sadayU'.

Dear Prabhakar,
Thanks for pointing out the error. I have corrected it.
Thanks again.

Modi galada is the right word. Modi means pettishness. A low intense arrogance. Tyagaraja swami is asking Rama, why do show pettishness in talking to me? galaDa is used for male gender. Somewhat like " Is he there.", "can he" etc. Where as galada means is it so. Neutral or female gender. galaDE means questioning, almost the same as galaDa. Not much of change in meaning. It sounds as if the questioner challenging a male- can he? For more help refer to this Telugu dictionary - http://www.andhrabharati.com/dictionary/
Telugu is my mother touché and can speak and multiple dialects of the language. I can explain certain nuances that can't be found in dictionaries. Happy to contribute to this forum.
