    Notes –
    Variations –
In one book, only the last stanza is called ‘caraNa’ and others are called ‘svara sAhitya’. In other books, all have been treated as caraNas.

caraNas 2,3,4,5,6,7 are given as caraNas 7,2,3,4,6 and 5 respectively in some books.

    References -
2 - pavamAna sutuDu nI mahima telpa – In vAlmIki ramAyaNa (sundara kANDa, Chapter 35), when hanumAn introduces himself to Mother sItA as messenger of SrI rAma, in order to ascertain the veracity of the statement, sItA asks hanuman to describe the personality of SrI rAma. When hanuman does so, sItA becomes enraptured by the description.

SrI tyAgarAja seems to contrast harsh words of suruci (caraNa 4) with comforting words of hanumAn (caraNa 5).

4 – dRta rathAnga – Though this has been translated as ‘wielder of discus’, ‘rathAnga’ might also refer to ‘chariot wheel’ which Lord SrI kRshNa took up as a weapon to slay bhIshma in the War of mahAbhArata. Please refer to mahAbhArata, Ninth day battle (story in brief)

    Comments -
3 – vidEha mAnasa vihAra – In one book, this has been translated as ‘one who abides in hearts of jnAnis’; in another book, this has been translated as ‘one who plays with the realised souls of yOgi’s mind’.

As per patanjali yOga sUtras, ‘vidEha’ means ‘disincarnate Gods’ –

    bhava pratyayO vidEha prakRti-layAnAM I.19

“(When such concentration is not accompanied by non-attachment, and ignorance therefore remains,) the aspirant will reach the state of the disincarnate gods or become merged in the forces of Nature.” (Translation by Swami Prabhavananda)

‘vidEha’ is generally used in three contexts – (1) to refer to King janaka – in my opinion, this is not meant here; (2) to refer to those who have attained vidEha mukti – in my opinion, the minds of those who have attained vidEha mukti, have already been dissolved – therefore, ‘vidEha’ and ‘mAnasa’ are self-contradictory; (3) to refer ‘disincarnate gods’ - in my opinion, this may be appropriate meaning for ‘vidEha’ here; it has been accordingly translated as ‘celestials’.

5 – dharaja mukhyulu – This has been translated as ‘important personages of the Earth’. However, ‘dharaja’ may be taken to mean ‘sItA’ – daughter of Earth. But in such a case, it should be ‘dharajA’ – similar to ‘nagajA’. If it is taken as ‘sItA’, then, ‘mukhyulu’ is left aloof – in the absence of ‘Adi’ – etc (dharajAdi mukhyulu) (dharajA + Adi).

    O My Mind!

    • The Lord had His say.

      • Falsifying the dictums of true path (He Himself) taught, He maintained the stand He held.

      • He spoke words suited to the occasion.

        • As if defaming His parents (dEvaki and vasu dEva), He spoke words suited to the occasion.

        • The Lord of SrI rangam, One who generated sacred river gangA, One belonging to musical tradition, spoke words suited to the occasion.

        • He who, without fulfilling the desire of the gOpis, makes fun of them, spoke words suited to the occasion.

        • The Supreme Lord who makes the damsels enamoured of Him and also makes them worship Him, spoke words suited to the occasion; Lord hari, who, when yaSOda joyously kisses Him as her son, would keep smiling, spoke words suited to the occasion.

        • The Lord who is both substance and non-substance, worshipped by great sages like sanaka and sanandana, the prop of everything, spoke words suited to the occasion.

        • I am beholding Him in my heart Lotus as – the supremely affectionate One towards devotees, the Ocean of virtues, the Sinless One throughout life, and the reliever of the troubles of this age of kali; but, He spoke words suited to the occasion.

        • I prayed to Him as – ‘O Lord rAma candra! O Lord of raghu dynasty! O Soft and sweet-spoken! O Lord reclining on SEsha! O Brother of pArvatI! O Unborn! O Lord who speeds on garuDa! O Lord praised by Emperors! O Lord with healthy limbs! O Lotus petal Eyed!’; instead of protecting me, He spoke words suited to the occasion.

        • I extolled Him as – ‘O Lord SrI vEnkatESa! O Self-effulgent One! O Most Eminent of all! O Lord abiding in the hearts of virtuous people! O Lord hari wearing golden garments and resplendent with shining diadem and ear-ornaments!’; but, He - Lord rAma candra who is the Lord of humans and who is sung about by this tyAgarAja - spoke words suited to the occasion.

      • He spoke words suited to the occasion;

    Notes –
    Variations –
    3 – samayAniki – samayAlaku.

4 – EkincanaTu – EgincanaTu. In telugu, these two words (Eku – Egu) have different meanings. By softening the ‘ka’ it should not be made into ‘ga’ because the meaning will be distorted. In the present context ‘EgincinaTu’ is meaningless. Therefore, ‘EkincanaTu’ has been adopted.

    8 – jEsE – jEseDu.

9 – muddu peTTa – muddu peTTu : In the present context, the correct word is ‘muddu peTTa’.

10 - This SS is available only in the book ‘Compositions of Tyagaraja’ by SrI TK Govinda Rao.

15 – svaprakASa – suprakASa : In my opinion, ‘svaprakASa’ is the correct word.

    16 – pogaDagA – pogaDaga.

    18 – veta galgina – veta galgitE.

utter falsehood; beseech mean-minded; worship even benevolent kings; forget the Sun (worship); touch meat; drink any intoxicants; cause injury to others; forget teachings; use or enjoy the three kinds of desires - wife, children and wealth; exhibit the delight of wandering as living free; deceive anyone; utter falsehood with blessed or pious people; abandon the truth even when his mind or intellect is disturbed; deviate from his aim with the understanding that he is only a witness.

Please also refer to kRti ‘manavinAlakinca’ rAga naLina kAnti, wherein SrI tyAgarAja states that ‘for the sake of suffering humanity, He exemplified by His conduct’ (kanipincinADE naData).

19 – Sama dama - Six Virtues – shaDguNa sampat – Sama - control upon his own mind; dama - control upon his physical body; titiksha - forbearance for the odds and evens of the nature; samAdhAna - equanimity of all beings and having a sympathetic mind; uparati - indifference with a sAkshi type of mind; Sraddha - sincere adherence to the words of guru and SAstrAs, by word and deed. Source - shaDguNa sampat

    Comments -
1 – sAdhincenE – The word has been translated as ‘had His say’ and ‘maintained’ depending on the construction of sentence.

At the end of the kRti, SrI tyAgarAja mentions how the Lord ‘had His say’ – ‘centa rAkanE’ – without coming near – in spite of all the prayers etc. SrI tyAgarAja cites examples of the Lord’s behaviour in the svara sAhityas. Therefore, SrI tyAgarAja implies that this is usual for the Lord to behave so with devotees.

2 – sanmArga vacanamula bonku jEsi – svara sAhityas 1 to 4 of the caraNa are in praise of SrI kRshNa. The stark difference between conduct of SrI rAma and SrI kRshNa is what mentioned here. However, to understand the true purport of the sports which the Lord enacted as SrI kRshNa, it needs a frame of mind like those of SrI rAmakRshNa paramahaMsa, mIrA, ANDAL and other devotees of the Lord. Though SrI tyAgarAja seems to criticise the Lord in this kRti, if we read his ‘nauka caritra’ wherein he has dramatised the ‘rAs lIlA’, it would be clear that SrI tyAgarAja is pointing out only to ‘apparent’ contradictions. - Annie Besant’s comments on the episode of vastra apaharaNa -

“The Gopis were Rishis, and the Lord Supreme as a babe is teaching them a lesson. But there is more than that. There is a profound occult lesson behind the story. When the Soul is approaching the Supreme Lord at one great stage of initiation, it has to pass through a great ordeal. Stripped of everything on which it has hitherto relied, stripped of everything that is not its inner self, deprived of all external aid, of all external protection, of all external covering, the soul itself, in its own inherent life, must stand naked and alone, with nothing to rely on save the life of the Self within it. If it flinches before the ordeal, if it clings to anything to which it has hitherto looked for help, if in the supreme hour, it cries out for friend or help, or even the Guru himself, the soul fails in that ordeal. Naked and alone it must go forth, with absolutely none to aid it save the divinity within itself. And it is that nakedness of the soul as it approaches the supreme goal, that is told of in that story.”

3 – samayAniki tagu mATalADeNE – spoke words suited to the occasion. In the kRti ‘Emani mATADitivO’ – rAga tODi, SrI tyAgarAja praises the speech of SrI rAma appropriate to the occasion which kept everyone attracted to Him. But, here, ‘tagu mATalu’ (words suited to occasion) refer to cleverness - which SrI tyAgarAja calls ‘sanmArga vacanamula bonku jEsi’ (falsifying dictums of true path) – rather a justification for what the Lord said in many occasions.

4 – dEvaki vasu dEvulanEkincanaTu – In some books, this has been taken to mean ‘He subjected his parents to trials and sorrow’. In my opinion, the corresponding word Ekincu’ does not convey any such meaning; it means ‘defame’ and similar meanings.

9 – navvucuNDu – kRshNAvatAra is considered by vaishNavas as a pUrNAvatara (though SrI tyAgarAja considers rAmAvatAra to be so – please refer to his kRti ‘raghupatE rAma – rAga SahAna’ – caraNa 2) wherein the Lord fully exhibited His sports to the wonderment of one and all; yet He, for all His pretensions, was a babe. Therefore, the smile (navvu) on His face as if to mock at His ‘mother’. Please refer to pApanAsam sivan’s kRti ‘enna tavam seydanai yaSOdA’ wherein, he ecstatically sings ‘para brahmaM unnai ammAyenRazhaikka’ (what penances did you perform in order that the Supreme Lord would call you as ‘mother’?).

11 – sArAsAra – as per Sanskrit Dictionary this word means - substance and (or) emptiness, strength and (or) weakness, worth and (or) worthlessness, strong and (or) weak. Please also refer to similar words ‘artha anartha’ (vishNu sahasranAmaM) etc which refer to the Supreme Lord (paramAtma).

13 – hRdambujamuna jUcucuNDaga – This has been translated as ‘while I am beholding in my heart-lotus’; however, it could also mean ‘while I am looking forward for Him (to come) in my heart-lotus’. This goes with what SrI tyAgarAja tells in the end of the kRti ‘centa rAkanE sAdhincenE’ – ‘He had His say without coming near’.

14 – para nArI sOdara – In some books it has been taken as ‘one who behaves like brother with other women’. In my opinion, considering the context, this refers to ‘pArvatI’ – ‘brother of pArvathI’. ‘para’ also means ‘Supreme Being’.

    Notes –
    Variations –
1 – candara vadanuni – canduru varNuni. The hue of the Lord is blue-black. SrI tyAgarAja has, nowhere, mentioned the hue of the Lord is white i.e. the hue of moon. He uses the word ‘canduru bOlu mukhamu’ in the kRiti ‘ennaDu jUtunO’ – rAga kalAvati. Therefore, while ‘canduru’ may be correct, ‘varNuni’ seems to be incorrect.

General – In some books, the first 9 caraNas are treated as svara sAhitya and the caraNa 10 as the only caraNa.

2 – salipi – nilipi : The words ‘salipi’ – ‘to perform’ and ‘nilipi’ - ‘to stop’ have totally opposite meanings. The wordings of the kRti do not seem to permit ‘nilipi’ (stopping) for the following reasons –

    (1) There are two similar words – ‘cara’ (go about) and ‘sancara’ (go about together or remain with); if 'nilipi' is accepted, one of the words will become superfluous.
    (2) If 'sancAra' (rambling of mind) is to be stopped (nilipi), then the qualifier 'vara' (vara sancAramu) would become wrong because 'vara' always indicates something auspicious and not negative. Therefore, 'vara' will become superfluous.
    (3) SrI tyAgarAja uses the word ‘cara’ frequently to indicate where the Lord found - ‘Agama cara’ etc; here he uses ‘mAnasa vana cara’ to mean ‘one who is found in the woods of mind’
    (4) In the kRti ‘sundara tara dEhaM’ – rAga pantuvarALi, SrI tyAgarAja states ‘tyAgarAja hRt-sancAraM’ – one who is found in the heart of this tyAgarAja.
    (5) ‘sancara’ has been used by SrI tyAgarAja in another kRti ‘mAnasa sancararE rAmE’ – rAga punnAgavarALi which clearly indicates the meaning of the word ‘sancararE’ is ‘going along or remaining’.
    (6) The famous kRti of sadASiva brahmEndra ‘mAnasa sancararE’ is also worth mentioning.
    (7) The kRti is about great personages (mahAnubhAvulu) who have already achieved perfection. Therefore, 'stopping (nilipi) rambling of mind' contravenes the kRti substantially.

However, I may humbly submit that unless one has actually beheld (sancAra) the Lord in his mind (intellect), all these discussions would amount to intellectual verbiage only. From that standpoint, I cannot boldly make a statement as to what ‘sancAra’ actually means.

10 – santasambunanu – santatambunanu : ‘santasambunanu’ meaning ‘joyfully’ seem more appropriate in the present context.

    14 – talacE – talacu.

    References –
11 - shaNmata – Worship of Lord Siva (Saivam), viSNu (vaishNava), Sakti (Sakta), kumAra (kaumAra), gaNapati (gANapatya) and sUrya (saura).

    12 – muppadi mukkOti sura – (also known as ‘tridaSa’ – 12 Adityas, 8 vAsus, 11 rudras, 2 aSvins = 33; their lord – tridaSa-pati or adhipa – indra).

    Comments -
3 – saraguna – this caraNa is to be read as continuation of the previous caraNa. SrI tyAgarAja states that as they behold the Lord, they immediately surrender their hearts at the feet of the Lord.

4 – pAdamulaku samarpaNamu – The place of a devotee is at the feet of the Lord. Otherwise, such beholding (poDaganE) of the Lord will be another ego-centric act.

5 – paramArthamagu nija mArgamutOnu – Please refer to kRti 'sogasugA mRdanga tALamu' rAga SrIranjani, wherein SrI tyAgarAja defines what a kRti is. Dikshitar, in his chAyAgauLa kRti 'sarasvatyA bhagavatyA' calls Mother 'sangIta sAhitya stana dvayayA'.

6 – hari guNa maNimaya saramulu gaLamuna – ‘gaLa’ means ‘neck’ and ‘throat’, ‘voice’. Accordingly what SrI tyAgarAja actually means is ‘with the voice describing the series of qualities of the Lord hari’. This caraNa seems to imply sage nArada.

7 – sarasuDu – Though this has been translated as ‘lovely Lord’, the implication seems to be the ‘Lord who is the pith and substance’.

8 – parama bhAgavata mauni vara – this may be taken as two – 'parama bhAgavata' (supreme devotees) and 'mauni vara' (great sages) or as a single 'great sages who are supreme devotees'. The latter version is more appealing.

9 – durmatamulanu kalla jEsinaTTi – The word ‘mata’ should be seen in the light of ‘shaNmata’ given in caraNa 9. SrI tyAgarAja seems to reject all methods of approach to the Lord other than bhakti. As the path of bhakti is common for all the six modes of worship (Saiva, vaishNava etc), ‘mata’ here, does not denote shaNmata. In many kRtis SrI tyAgarAja rejects sacrifices performed with desires. By 'dur-matamulu', he might be referring to kaula mArga etc. involving esoteric rites etc.

As stated in caraNa 3 – ‘pAdamulaku svAntam(a)nu sarOjamunu samarpaNamu sEyu’, SrI tyAgarAja here seems to refer to the statement of SrI rAma at the time surrender of vibhIshaNa (vAlmIki rAmAyaNa – yuddha kaNDa) -
    sakRdEva prapannAya tavAsmIti ca yAcatE
abhayaM sarva bhUtEbhyO dadAmi Etat vrataM mama XVIII -33

“To him, who comes to me, even once, yearning for protection (from me) saying ‘I am yours’, I vouchsafe his security against all living beings; such is my vow.”

The famous statement of SrI kRshNa in SrImad bhagavat gItA, Chapter 18 extolling ‘surrender’ as the sure means of redemption is also relevant -

    sarva-dharmAn-pari-tyajya mAm-EkaM SaraNaM vraja
ahaM tvA sarva-pApEbhyO mOkshayishyAmi mA SucaH 66

“Relinquishing all dharmas take refuge in Me alone; I will liberate thee from all sins; grieve not.” (Translation by Swami Swarupananda)

13 – bhAva rAga laya – bhAva – A true singing experience lies in understanding and expressing truly the mood (bhAva) encapsulated in the kRti. In the kRti 'svara rAga sudhA' – rAga SankarAbharaNaM, SrI tyAgarAja compares such singing, without understanding the bhAva, to 'mardala tALa gatulu teliyakanE mardincuTa' (beat the percussion instrument without knowing the pace (and/of) beat).

    • O Moon who blossoms the heart-lotus of lakshmI! O Lord who is beyond the reach of words and mind!
    • O Lord of celestials!
    • O Benefactor of this tyAgarAja!

    • Which (other) Lord’s son will protect me who has so much wickedness?

      • Lured by very evil-some sense-objects, I am replete with wickedness at all times.

      • While You exist in and as all Great Elements (space, air, fire, water, earth) (or all living beings), I did not realise Your omni-presence.

      • Right from young age, I became a sophist, bereft of nectarine essence of bhajana.

      • I roamed about, speaking pleasingly to others for their wealth, for filling the stomach.

      • I always spend time considering in my mind that, in this world, comfortable livelihood alone is everything.

      • Instead of learning svara and laya, I exulted by preaching others in luring unknown petty dancing girls and women; consequently,
      • though I became stone-hearted, I boasted myself to be equal to Your true devotees.

      • I forgot to chant glory of Your lotus feet, and instead, totally believed beautiful looking wife, dwellings, an army of children and huge wealth etc.

      • Instead of constant remembrance of Your charming Face-Lotus in my mind, I besought people blinded by evil-some arrogance; consequently,
      • I was caught in a pitiable state and therefore, grieving.
      • Not abhorring evil-some sense objects and evil desires, I ever became an offender and fickle minded.

      • Instead of considering human body to be hard to get, and attaining Supreme bliss (utilising it), I was ruined by becoming a slave of arrogance, envy, desire, miserliness and obsession (or delusion).
      • Though born as a brAhmaNa, I remained performing the tasks of lowly people.
      • I besought lowliest of humans and substantiated substance-less opinions somhow.

      • I wandered some time for wife and some time for inheritance, children, wealth and society (of friends and relatives) (Or wealthy relatives).

    • Therefore, which other Lord’s son will protect me who has such wickedness?

    Notes –
    Variations –
3 – madi karaga – madini karaga. In the present context, ‘madini’ is not appropriate.

4 – kshudrulu – SUdrulu. In my opinion, in the present context, ‘kshudrulu’ is the appropriate word.

5 – SilAtmulai – this is how it is given in all the books (in plural). However, in the present context, it should be 'SilAtmuDai' (singular).

    6 – dEva dEva – dEvAdi dEva.

    7 – mOhulaku – mOhamulaku.

    Comments -
1 – duDuku – This word has the meanings of 'folly', 'wickedness', 'silliness', 'rashness' etc. In the Pallavi, this has been translated as 'wickedness'. However, while connecting this word (duDuku) to anupallavi and all the SSs, the same meaning cannot be adopted. For example, while connecting SS2, the word will take the meaning of 'folly'.

2 – E dora koDuku – which (other) Lord’s son. This is an implied addressing ‘dASarathE’ (O son of king daSaratha!)
