O Wearer of (garland) vana mAla! O Noble Minded! O Lord bereft of desires! O Lord praised by Lord Siva! O Lord of Grand Illusion (OR O destroyer of the Grand Illusion)!

I addressed You as ‘dEva dEva’; I contemplated on You in my mind.
I chanted Your names as ‘rAma rAma’; deign to come;
I worshipped You with much yearning; the real path is indeed, chanting of Your names.
I extolled You as ‘rAja rAja’; I saluted calling You as 'Lord of this tyAgarAja'.
Word-by-word Meaning
P I rock the swing (UcErA) singing (ani) (literally as) (lullaby) ‘lAli lAli’ (lAliyaniyUcErA); O Wearer of (garland) vana mAla (literally garland of wild flowers! I behold (jUcErA) You with love (mAlimitO).
C1 I addressed (pilicErA) You as (ani) ‘dEva dEva’ (literally O Lord of celestials) (dEvayani);

C2 I chanted (palikErA) (literally uttered) Your names as (ani) ‘rAma rAma’ (rAmayani);
O Lord bereft of desires (nish-kAma)! O Lord praised (nuta) by Lord Siva – the enemy (ripu) of cupid (kAma)! Deign to come (rArA);
I rock the swing singing (lullaby) ‘lAli lAli’; O Wearer of (garland) vana mAla! I behold You with love.
C3 I worshipped (kolicErA) You (ninnu) with much yearning (kOri kOri);

I rock the swing singing (lullaby) ‘lAli lAli’; O Wearer of (garland) vana mAla! I behold You with love.
Notes –
Variations –
3 – mAyA dAri – mAya dAri.
4 – bhajanarA – bhajanerA. As ‘bhajanarA’ is the appropriate form, the same has been adopted.
Words like 'UcErA', 'jUcErA' 'pilicErA'... etc as 'UcedarA', 'jUcedarA', 'pilicedarA'....etc.
References –
1 – vana mAli - Lord vishNu's 'vaijayanti mAla' is called 'vanamAla'. tuLasi, mallikA, mandAra, pArijAta and Lotus are considered as constituents of vanamAla. For an article about 'garlands' and with particular reference to 'vaijayanti' and 'vanamAla'.
Comments –
2 – bhAvamuna talacErA – it is very difficult to translate these words. It is a state of mind.
3 – mAyA dAri –In some books, this has been translated as ‘destroyer of illusion’; in other books as ‘Lord of mAyA’. In telugu there is a word ‘dArincu’ (Sanskrit ‘dArita’) which means to ‘rent or cut asunder’.
Sanskrit word ‘dArin’ means ‘husband’. The telugu word ‘dAri’ is also equivalent to Sanskrit word ‘dhAri’. In the kRti ‘rAkA SaSi vadana’ – rAga ‘Takka’, SrI tyAgarAja calls Lord ‘mAya dhAri’.
Therefore either of these meanings may be correct, but ‘Lord of illusion’ seems to be more appropriate. This is in keeping with the statement of Lord in SrImad-bhagavad-gItA (Chpater 7) –

Notes –
Variations –
5 – vasishTha – viSishTa.
References –
5 – vasishTha – yOga vAsishTha is a treatise on vEdAnta written by sage vasishTha. The sage taught this yOga to his pupil SrI rAma. Brief on ‘yOga vAsishTha’.
6 – SambarAri - Demon Sambara was killed by pradyumna – (son of kRshNa) – also known as kAmadEva (cupid reborn).
Comments –
1 – tODi tEvE – tODi teccu – means ‘to fetch’; tEvE – addressing form for a female companion.
2 – kanikaramutO kani karamiDi – In some books, this has been translated as ‘seek Him eagerly and lead Him to me with due respect’; in other books, this has been applied to the Lord ‘He may clasp my hand compassionately’. As this kRti is in nAyikA bhAva, it should be applied to the mind; this is further substantiated by the word ‘fetch’.
3 – paTTAdhikAri – Generally this is translated as ‘king’. However, this word seems to have been used in the sense of ‘birudu’ – ‘appellation’; accordingly, it has been translated as ‘holder of the appellation of saving the fallen’.
4 – paramArtha mata – In the website referred below (General note), this has been taken to mean ‘surrender’ (SaraNAgati). However, when read in conjunction with ‘vasishTha’ (given in all the books excepting one wherein 'viSishTa' is given), this may mean the philosophy as prescribed in ‘yOga vAsishTha’ (treatise attributed to sage vasishTha) which is more advaitic in approach.
If ‘viSishTa’ is correct, then ‘surrender’ may be the appropriate meaning for 'paramArtha mata'. However, the word ‘paramArtha’ is defined differently by the followers of advaita, dvaita and viSishTAdvaita. Therefore, those who differed from the point of view of 'paramArtha mata' as defined in yOga vAsishTha, could have introduced the word 'viSishTa' – thus a possible interpolation.
7 – dhurINa – Generally, this word is applied to the Lord – ‘one who carries the burden’ or ‘chief’, ‘master’ etc. However, in one of the books, this has been applied to SrI tyAgarAja – servant tyAgarAja. From the flow of the language, this may also apply to SrI tyAgarAja. Therefore, both meanings are given.
General – A discussion on this kRti.

O My Mind!
Lord SrI rAma is vowed to one Word, one arrow and one wife.
He has unwavering mind (OR single willed).
He confers long-life and non-decaying blessed state of emancipation.
SrI rAma - praised by this tyAgarAja is the God effulgent on this Earth.
Never forget Him.
Word-by-word Meaning
P O My Mind (manasA)! Lord SrI rAma is vowed (vratuDE) to one (oka) Word (mATa), one (oka) arrow (bANamu) and one (oka) wife (patnI).
A He has (galavADE) unwavering (oka) (literally one) mind (cittamu) (OR single (oka) willed (cittamu)); never (oka nADunu) (literally not even one day) forget (maravakavE) Him;
O My Mind! Lord SrI rAma is vowed to one word, one arrow and one wife.
C He confers (osangunE) long-life (cira jIvitvamu) and non-decaying (nirjara) blessed (vara) state of emancipation (mOkshamu) (mOkshamosangunE);
SrI rAma - praised (nutuDu) by this tyAgarAja is the God (dEvuDE) effulgent (baragE) on this Earth (dhara);
O My Mind! Lord SrI rAma is vowed to one word, one arrow and one wife.
Notes –
Variations –
5 – cira jIvitvamu – ciranjIvitvamu. According to Sanskrit Dictionary ‘cirajIvin’ is the correct word. However, as per Telugu dictionary, both ‘cira jIvi’ and ‘ciranjIvi’ are correct.
7 – mOkshamu – saukhyamu. If ‘saukhyamu’ is correct, then ‘nirjara vara saukhyamu’, would mean ‘heavenly comfort’. In my opinion, it is doubtful whether SrI tyAgarAja would ever commend ‘heavenly comfort’ as a goal.
The word 'nirjara' generally means 'celestials' (please see comment below). Therefore, taking 'nirjara' in that sense (celestials), 'mOkshamu' seems to have been interpolated as 'saukhyamu'. Therefore, ‘mOkshamu’ seems to be the appropriate word.
8 – baragE – baragu.
References -
1 – oka mATa – one word – satya sandha – true to one's word. Please refer to statement of SrI rAma Himself – vAlmIki rAmAyaNa, ayOdhyA kANDa, Chapter 18 –
tad brUhi dEvi rAjnO yad-abhikAnkshitam |
karishyE pratijAnE ca rAmO dvir-nAbhi-bhAshatE || 30 ||
Addressed to kaikEyi –
"Therefore, speak out what you have got to say, O glorious lady! I shall do that which is coveted by the king and give my plighted word for it. Know that rAma does not speak twice."
Please also refer to - vAlmIki rAmAyaNa, ayOdhyA kANDa, Chapter 18
Comments -
2 – oka bANamu – please also refer to kRti 'evariccirirA' – madhyamAvati, wherein SrI tyAgarAja praises the bow and arrows of SrI rAma - 'okaTEsi padi nUrai veyyai cekapikalADi Satrulanu aNacenaTa' - one (arrow) shot by You, multiplying into tens, hundreds and thousands, subdued Your enemies by confounding them;
oka bANamu (one arrow) - may be interpreted as ‘single aim’ or ‘never failing in one’s aim’.
3 – oka patnI – One of the reasons for which SrI rAma is called ‘maryAda purushOttama’ is his vow for single wife. This is one of ‘limits’ (maryAda) set by SrI rAma as opposed to even his own father – daSaratha – who is stated to have had 60,000 wives other than 3 queens.
In uttara kANDa (whose authenticity is disputed) (Chapter 91), SrI rAma, after banishing His wife to the forest, installed a golden statue of sIta for aSvamEdha yajna (Horse sacrifice); He did not remarry.
4 – oka cittamu – ‘cittamu’ also means ‘will’. In vishNu sahasra nAma, one of the names of the Lord is ‘siddha sankalpa:’ (253)
“Siddhasankalpah -Sankalpa means “intellectual willing and wishing”. One who gains all that He wishes for, or One who immediately gains what He wills is called Siddha-sankalpah. Ordinarily we fail to gain what we demand because of the disintegration within ourselves. The Lord, the Perfect, is One who instantaneously gains all that He wishes; hence the Upanishads define Him as the Satya Sankalpavaan.” – Source – vishNu sahasra nAmaM - Meanings
The very act of consecration of vibhIshaNa with the Lordship of lankA, even before the commencement of war effort, indicates this unfailing will - 'oka cittamu' of rAma.
5 – cira jIvitvamu nirjara vara mOkshamu – AnjanEya is called ciranjIvi. SrI tyAgarAja seems to mean ‘bhukti’ and ‘mukti’ here.
6 – nirjara – non-ageing - Generally this word is translated as 'celestials'; however, here this word qualifies 'mOksha' – and indicates the non-decaying state of liberation.
9 – tyAgarAja nutuDu – this may either be joined to 'dhara baragE dEvuDE' or to the pallavi. However, the former version is more appealing.
General – the word endings 'E' – vratuDE, galavADE etc. – is the feminine addressing form. In many kRtis, SrI tyAgarAja addresses his mind like that.

A He has (galavADE) unwavering (oka) (literally one) mind (cittamu) (OR single (oka) willed (cittamu)); never (oka nADunu) (literally not even one day) forget (maravakavE) Him;
O My Mind! Lord SrI rAma is vowed to one word, one arrow and one wife.
C He confers (osangunE) long-life (cira jIvitvamu) and non-decaying (nirjara) blessed (vara) state of emancipation (mOkshamu) (mOkshamosangunE);
SrI rAma - praised (nutuDu) by this tyAgarAja is the God (dEvuDE) effulgent (baragE) on this Earth (dhara);
Please refer to statement of SrI rAma Himself – vAlmIki rAmAyaNa, ayOdhyA kANDa, Chapter 18 –
tad brUhi dEvi rAjnO yad-abhikAnkshitam |
karishyE pratijAnE ca rAmO dvir-nAbhi-bhAshatE || 30 ||
Comments -
2 – oka bANamu – please also refer to kRti 'evariccirirA' – madhyamAvati, wherein SrI tyAgarAja praises the bow and arrows of SrI rAma - 'okaTEsi padi nUrai veyyai cekapikalADi Satrulanu aNacenaTa' - one (arrow) shot by You, multiplying into tens, hundreds and thousands, subdued Your enemies by confounding them;
oka bANamu (one arrow) - may be interpreted as ‘single aim’ or ‘never failing in one’s aim’.

Variations –
2 – centa – cinta : In some books 'cinta' has been adopted and translated as 'thought’ (I shall not abandon Your thought). In the anupallavi and caraNams 1 to 3, SrI tyAgarAja cites examples of persons being in the proximity of SrI rAma. Therefore, 'centa’ – proximity – seems to be the appropriate word. Further 'centa' is more in accordance with prAsa-anuprAsa.
3 – viDuva jAla SrI rAma – viDuva jAla.
8 – koluvaga – koluva.

4 – antakAri hanumantuDai – In the kRti 'ADa mODi galadE’, SrI tyAgarAja states that AnjanEya is an aspect of Siva (SankarAmSuDu). However, in this kRti, he states that Siva himself has taken the form of AnjanEya. The Story of AnjanEya - an aspect of Lord Siva.
7 – sura gaNamulu vAnarulai – Please refer to SrImad vAlmIki rAmAyaNa – bAla kANDa – Chapter 17 for complete details.
Comments -
1 – enta rAna – enta pOni (whatever might come – whatever might leave)– a colloquial usage in Telugu which generally means 'come what may'.
5 – SEshuDu Sivuniki bhUshuDu – SEsha also known as ‘ananta’ is stated to be the couch of vishNu, the snake around the neck of Siva, the ring in the finger of umA and the arm-bracelet of vinAyaka.
6 – hituDu – sage vasishTha was the family priest of King daSaratha and then for SrI rAma. The family priest is called ‘purO-hita’. Therefore, SrI tyAgarAja uses the word ‘hita’ to mean ‘benefactor’ and also ‘family priest’.

“(The orb of) the sun is located in the middle of the egg (of this universe), which corresponds to the centre of space lying between the upper and lower shells of the cosmic egg. The (extent of) space between (the orb of) the sun and (the outer shell of) the cosmic egg (on all sides) is twenty-five crore Yojanas (or two thousand million miles) (43).
Because the sun-god appeared in this lifeless (inanimate) egg (as the Cosmic Being), the appellation of mArtaNDa (mRtE aNDa bhavaH) has been applied to him (ever) since. He is (also) called hiraNyagarbha inasmuch as he (the sun) represents the embryo (located) in (the centre of) the golden egg (of this universe) (44).
By the sun indeed are divided (clearly defined) the quarters, the heavens, the celestial region, the earth and (other such) distinctions (divisions), the worlds of enjoyment and supreme bliss (final beatitude), the infernal regions (where one undergoes tortures of various kinds), the subterranean worlds (atala and so on) and all (other divisions) (45).
Of Gods and human beings as well as of subhuman creatures (that are oblong in shape), of reptiles and plants (the vegetable kingdom), nay of all species of living beings, the sun-god is the very Self (the animating spirit) as well as the deity presiding over their eyesight (46).

O My Mind!
It is indeed rAma alone - the pure Existence!
It is indeed rAma alone who is effulgent in the core of the fiercely glowing Sun.
He is the Lord beyond the darkness (inertness) and other qualities;
He is embodiment of dharma;
He is equal for all;
He is the One who bestows welfare;
He is the benefactor of the mind (or intellect) of this tyAgarAja.
It is indeed rAma alone who pervades the whole Universe!
Don’t be ruined needlessly.

2 – mArtaNDa – Lord Siva is also called mArtaNDa bhairava – For more details of - mArtANDa bhairava
