- O Lord subrahmaNya - Six Faced!
- O Lord abiding in brahma puri! O Son of pArvatI!
- O Moon Faced! O Lord kumAra! O Compassion Embodied! O Lotus Eyed! O Lord well praised by Lord Siva - wearer of Digit of Moon! O Benefactor of dependents on You!
- I do not find anywhere a God like You.
- Your form is not possible to be comprehended!
- The sum total of charm existing in millions of cupids would be equivalent to that of the tip of Your nail;
- You firmly implanted Your such an auspicious form, in my mind.
- That day, with Your auspicious form, You were playing with boys of Your age on the kailAsa mountain;
- then, brahmA visited kailAsa;
- You questioned Him about the meaning of praNava;
- when He, fearlessly, told an untruth that he Himself to be the purport of praNava, You got angry with Him;
- quickly, finding one (of the nine) of Your warriors, gave him definitive orders, for carrying out (brahmA’s task of) projection, listing out the powers to do so;
- on hearing this, the celestials, vishNu and Siva appreciated Your action.
- vishNu, Siva, Lords of Directions, Moon, Sun, vidyAdhara and heroes existing in this great Universe, finding it beyond their capacity to subdue the arrogance of SUra padmAsura - the greatest enemy of celestials, joining together, sought Your refuge;
- hearing their pleas and unable to bear, You gloriously subdued the arrogance of the asura.
- That day, with Your auspicious form, You were playing with boys of Your age on the kailAsa mountain;
- I do not find anywhere a God like You.

quickly (saraguna) finding (kani) a (oka) warrior (kinkaruni) (literally servant) among (andu) the nine (nava) warriors (vIrulu) (vIrulandoka),
giving (icci) him definitive (mummAru) orders (selavu) (selavicci), listed out (varusagAnu osagina) (allotted one by one) the power(s) (Saktini) (Saktinosagina) for carrying out projection (sRshTi) - the task of brahmA,

Notes -
Variations –
7 – hari harulaku - hari harAdulaku.
9 – brahmANDamuna – brahmANDamulanu.
10 – velayu – velasE.
11 – vIrAdula – vara vIrAdula.
12 - jata kUDi – jata gUDaka : ‘jata gUDaka’ gives an opposite meaning; therefore, it is wrong.
References -
1 – brahma puri – In one book, it is stated that this refers to sIrkAzhi in Tamil Nadu. The name of Lord Siva in the temple is brahmapurISvara – (sIrkAzhi temple)
However, in another book, this is given as ‘dharmapura’. No further details are given as to where this place ‘dharmapura’ is situated.
3 - praNavArthamu tAnanu vidhini kOpaginci – For complete story, please refer to ‘kanda purANaM’ of kacciyappa SivAcArya (tamizh) – prose translated by rAmasAmi pulavar. Please also refer to – e-book ‘Lord Shanmukha and His Worship’ (download)
4 - nava vIrulu – Nine chief warriors were also born along with subrahmaNya to help in His war effort. Their names all start with ‘vIra’ – vIra bAhu, vIra kEsari, vIra mahEndra, vIra mahESvara, vIra purandara, vIra rAkshasa, vIra mArthANDa, vIrAntaka, vIra dhIra (refer to ‘kanda purANa’ referred above).
Comments -
2 – verapu lEka – this may be applied either to brahmA or to Lord subrahmaNya. As brahmA was telling a lie about the meaning of praNava, he should have been fearful of the consequences of such an utterance. On the otherhand, the audacity with which Lord subrahmaNya imprisoned brahmA and took upon himself the task of sRshTi may be considered ‘fearless’. Otherwise, would subrahmaNya ask His own father – Lord Siva – to come as disciple to be ‘initiated’ in praNava?
5 – mummAru – thrice - Uttering a word thrice makes it a proclamation.
6 - mura purArulu – the word ‘ari’ is common for ‘mura’ and ‘pura’ - murAri (vishNu) and purAri (Siva).
8 - vidyAdhara – servants of Lord Siva with magical powers.
11 - vIrAdulaku – this may refer to indra and others and not the nine warriors mentioned above.
13 - parama drOhi SUra padma – mAya – mother of SUra padma – was sent to sage kaSyapa (generator of celestials) by SukrAcArya (preceptor of asuras) for the sake begetting sons in order to vanquish the celestials. Therefore, SUra padma is considered as born enemy (parama drOhi) of celestials.
14 - kumAra – Paramacharya Chandrasekharendra Saraswati, in the below cited (web) reference, explains this word in the following words – “Manmadhan is also called 'mAran'; and 'kumAran' some one who puts mAra to shame - is more beautiful than him. 'kutsita-mAraH' - 'kumAraH' ”
He has given a beautiful exposition of Dikshitar’s kIrtana ‘SrI subrahmaNyAya namastE’ as told to Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar explaining in detail the story of subrahmaNya
15 – tyAgarAja – In this kRti, this refers to Lord Siva – name of the Lord at tiruvArUr.
