References –
5 - sOhaM – This is one of mahAvAkyas meaning ‘I am verily He’ or simply ‘I am’. Please refer to kRti of sadASiva brahmEndra – ‘khElati piNDANDE’ wherein he mentions ‘haMsas-sOhaM sOhaM-haMsamiti’. This is also known as ‘ajapA gAyatri’ (chantless gayatri) - Meaning of sOhaM.
Comments -
2 – santa janulu – The word ‘santa’ seems similar to hindi expression ‘sAdhu sant’ meaning ‘saintly’ or ‘venerable’. The same telugu word (santa) has the meaning of ‘market’. Keeping in view the context, it has been translated as ‘venerable people’.

ReplyDeleteDear Sri Govindaswami,
ReplyDeleteWhile translating the word, I had kept in mind your observation. However, this meaning does not fit into the context. Sri Tyagaraja makes profound statements in his kRti which can be vouched for only by such persons who have experienced those states.
Persons engaged in vEda recitation do not necessarily mean that they have grasp of the significance of the words - leave alone aparOksha jnAna (apprehension) of these statements. For example, the statement about 'sOhamainadE' is so profound that it is, in my opinion, the sole aim advaita philosophy.
Therefore, in my opinion, by 'santa janulu' Sri tyAgarAja does not mean 'those engaged in vEda recitation'.
Regards,
V Govindan
Namaste sir, I somehow felt that kAni does not fit into context of anupallavi because it is generally used in the sense of 'but'. I do not know if it can be used in the meaning 'indeed'. Please correct me if I am wrong.
