paritApamu-manOhari

In the kRti ‘paritApamu kani’ – rAga manOhari, SrI tyAgarAja reminds Lord about his promise.

P paritApamu kani(y)ADina
palukula maracitivO nA (pari)

A sari lEni sItatO
sarayu madhyambuna nA (pari)

C varamagu bangAru 1vADanu
merayucu 2padi pUTalapai
3karuNincedan(a)nucu 4krE-
kanula tyAgarAjuni (pari)

Gist
Have You forgotten the words You uttered, while You were shining in the nice golden boat, in the midstream of river sarayu, along with the peerless sItA, looking with side glance at the pitiable state of this tyAgarAja, that you would show grace after ten days?

Word-by-word Meaning

P Have You forgotten (maracitivO) the words (palukula) You uttered (ADina) seeing (kani) (kaniyADina) my (nA) pitiable state (paritApamu)?

A Have You forgotten the words You uttered seeing my (nA) pitiable state while You were in the midstream (madhyambuna) of river sarayu along with the peerless (sari lEni) sItA (sItatO)?

C Have You forgotten the words You uttered,
while shining (meryucu) in the nice (varamagu) golden (bangAru) boat (vADanu),
looking with side (krE) glance (kanula) at the pitiable state of this tyAgarAja (tyAgarAjuni),
that (anucu) you would show grace (karuNincedanu) (karuNincedananucu) after (pai) ten (padi) days (pUTala)?

Notes –
Variations –
1 – vADa – vODa. The words ‘vADa’ and ‘ODa’ have similar meaning – ‘a boat’. If ‘ODa’ has been used by SrI tyAgarAja, then when it is joined to ‘bangAru’, it could become ‘vODa’.

4 – krE-kanula – krI-kanulanu. There is a difference between these two words – ‘krI-kanula’ means ‘down-cast glance’ or ‘dejection’; ‘krE-kanula’, as per telugu dictionary, means 'apAnga', ‘askance’ or ‘side-long glance’ or ‘suspiciously’. The saMskRta, word 'apAnga' and saMskRta, telugu and tamizh word ‘kaTaksha’ aka ‘side-glance’, means ‘anugraha’, ‘karuNa’, ‘kindness’, ‘favour’. Therefore, in the present context, considering the preceding word ‘karuNinceda’, the appropriate word seems to be ‘krE-kanula’ ie ‘kaTAksha’ and not ‘krI-kanula’.

References –
3 – karuNincedanu – SrI tyAgarAja uses a present tense for a future action. When the Lord wills something, it is considered as 'done'. Therefore, even if the action is to take place after ten (or five) days, it is as good as 'done' now. This is 'satya sankalpa' or siddha sankalpa' – vishNu sahasranAma (253)

Comments –
2 – padi pUTa – In some books, this has been translated as ‘ten days’; in other books, this has been translated as ‘five days’. pUTa means a part of the day. Therefore ‘padi pUTa’ may mean five days also if each daytime or nighttime is taken as one pUTa. However, in the absence of any definite measurement involved, it has been translated as ‘ten days’.

According to Shri TS Balakrishna Sastrigal, the great exponent of harikathA, this song pertains to the fag end of life of SrI tyAgarAja and after he sang this song, he attained mOksha as promised by the Lord.

As an elderly lover of our Music and Thyagaraja kritis since I was a boy of ten years, I deeply appreciate your work in compiling some of the songs, transliterating the Sahitya and rendering the text in English.
As a boy I grew up in Thanjavur, where my father (a 'rasika' literate in Telugu, posted there
as a district judge in the 1940's, who composed some kritis in Tamil and was
an early founder of Thyaga Brahma Sabha, where we heard Maharajapuram Viswa-, Ariyakudi and many great Vidwans) took us to the Thiruvayyar annual 'aaradhana'.
I wish you would enlarge your valuable website by some discussion on the
Ragas of the kritis and the composer's contribution to the Raga.
Thanks and deep respects to you from a fellow-rasika, a retired Indian diplomat of 82.
'Swara raga sudha rasa'. By the way, please collect all the known references to our music by Thyagaraja. I think he considered Rama the divine rasika of music, imbued with Bhakti and Mridanga talamu.

Dear Sri Madhavan,
I am deeply grateful for the kind words. I am also aware that after compiling the kRtis of SrI tyAgarAja, the next logical step would be to analyse them. But in order to do that one has to be musically and literature-wise qualified enough - I am neither. My only qualification was that my mother tongue is Telugu and I was born in Tamil Nadu. Further, one must set aside his his own notions because the subject of discussion is 'parA bhakti'. In view these shortcomings, I stopped short of going deeper. God willing, and the Saint willing, I may undertake the same, if I am commanded so.

As regards discussions on rAgas of kRtis, there is a website www.rasikas.org which have membership on wide ranging subjects, where such discussions could take place. You may become a member and initiate discussions.

Nice to hear from an elderly person who held high positions.
With Regards,
V Govindan

charaNam says 'bangAru vADanu'. Is it not bangaru vODanu?
