rAmA nIyeDa-kharaharapriya
In the kRti ‘rAmA nIyeDa prEma’ – rAga kharaharapriya, SrI tyAgarAja states that those who do not have love towards the Lord, would not know the taste of Lord’s names.

O Lord sItA rAmA! O Lord praised by this tyAgarAja!
Can the taste of Your name be known to those who are devoid of love towards You?
Can anything about the behaviour of a chaste woman be known to an actor donning the robe of a woman? In the same manner, can the taste of Your name be known to those who are devoid of love towards You?
Even without one self experiencing one's happiness, can appropriate advice to others produce happiness (to those who receive it)? If a terrific tiger puts on the garb of a cow, would even milk be produced for the child (or calf)?

Dear Sri Govindan
ReplyDeleteIn anupallavi for ‘kAmini’ you have given the meaning as woman. Does this not refer to a lustful woman? I have a feeling that tyAgarAja has purposely used this. He probably means that an actor who dons the role of a chaste woman has perforce to learn about the qualities and behaviour of such a woman. But as he is playing the role of a kAmini he need not practice the behqviour of a sAdhvi.

Govindaswamy
Dear Sri Govindaswamy,
ReplyDeletePlease refer to meaning of kAmini. It also refers to 'a woman'. In my opinion, there seems to be no compelling reason to derive meaning of 'a lustful woman' here.

V Govindan
in tamil translation 'pattru' seems to be right word instead of 'kaadal'(which occurs between a man and a woman).
ReplyDeleteAlso,"nalam" seems to be a better than 'sugam'
Dear Venkata Ratnam,
ReplyDeleteNice that you have seen my blog and commented.
The word used by Tyagaraja is 'prEma'. 'prEma' in bhakti literature refers to anurAga bhakti or kAntAsakti - love towards God as that of wife unto her husband. Therefore, 'kAdal' is the appropriate word.
Your second point - Though 'sugam' and 'nalam' have almost similar meanings - but not quite similar, the word used by SrI tyAgarAja is 'sukhamu'. Therefore, wherever possible I have retained the word used by SrI tyAgarAja, if the same or similar word is available in Tamil.
Thanks for your comments,
Regards,
V Govindan
The raga for thus krithi is supposed to be dilipakam right? But today it's sung in its janaka ragam kharaharapriya
