Re : telisi rAma cintanatO nAm...Dear Sri Govindan
Re : telisi rAma cintanatO nAmamu

Usually only the first caraNam is sung. Although anupallavi is clear I had always been wondering why the caraNam appears to be incomplete, leaving the interpretations to the listeners/readers. TyAgarAja is mentioning the contradictory meanings of same words. But I do not find anywhere explicit mention of people who are able to (not able to) differentiate between the two sets of meanings. For example after mentioning that ‘RamA’ means a fickle eyed woman, the connection to kAm(A)dula pOru vAru and AmAnavulu is not obvious, untill reading interpretation like yours. Why has tyAgarAja made this kriti a puzzle?
I also wonder how one word gives two meanings which do not appear to have anything in common.

C1 –In TTD book the meaning given is something like “These (women) are immersed in kAmA etc”

I am trying some variations below.

C1 – rAmA brahmamunaku pEru ana
A mAnava janana-Artulu tIru

C2-arkamu jilleDu taru pEru anucu
markaTa buddhulu-eTTu tIru
bhAskaruniki pEru arkuDu-anucu
kutarkamu-anE andhakAramu tIru

If thinking and uttering (anucu) that ‘arka’ (arkamu) is the name (pEru) of the ’milk-weed plant’ (jilleDu taru), how (eTTu) will the monkey (markaTa) mentality (buddhulu) (buddhuleTTu) come to an end (tIru).
If uttering and thinking (anucu) that Sun’s name is ‘arka’ (arkuDu) the darkness (andhakAramu) called (anE) fallacious arguments (sophistry) (kutarkamu) (kutarkamanE) will come to an end (tIru).

C3- ajamu mEshamunaku pEru anucu
nija kOrikalu-ElAgu-IDEru
ajuDu vAg-ISvaruniki pEru ana
vijayamu kalgunu tyAgarAja nutuni
If thinking that (anucu) ‘aja’ (ajamu) is the name (pEru) of he-goat (mEshamunaku) , how (ElAgu) true (nija) aspirations (kOrikalu) will fructify (IDEru) (kOrikalElAgIDEru).
If uttering and thinking (ana) that ‘aja’ (ajuDu) is the name of Lord brahmA (vAg-ISvaruniki pEru) one will achieve (kalgunu) success (vijayamu) (if one meditates on Lord brahmA when uttering ‘aja’);

Regards
GovindaswamyGovindaswamyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16265190124878573283noreply@blogger.com
